Sea of Thieves (SoT) will only let players play in the Safer Seas mode if they do not have a PlayStation Plus subscription. Learn more if you need PlayStation Plus to play, as well as the advantage of having a subscription active in the game.
It is not a requirement to have a PlayStation Plus (PS Plus) subscription in order to play Sea of Thieves. However, not having a subscription active will only let players play solo while in Safer Seas mode. This means you won't be able to invite your friends to play.
In this mode, players can still access the vast majority of the content including the story-rich Tall Tales. However, content such as PvP, Athena’s Fortune Trading Company, and certain World Events are not accessible in this game mode.
The rewards gained within this game mode are also reduced by only earning 30% of reputation and gold that you would normally get in High Seas (Online) mode.
Safer Seas is not considered an offline mode as the mode is still connected to servers hosted in the cloud. This means that even if you're playing Sea of Thieves solo without PS Plus, you will still need to maintain a stable internet connection to continue playing.

Having a PlayStation Plus subscription active will allow players to access all of Sea of Thieves' content including its PvP modes: The Reaper’s Bones and Faction battles, Athena’s Fortune Trading Company, and World Events: Fort of the Damned and Fort of Fortune.
Having a subscription active also means that players can sail the seas with other online players and invite friends in both High and Safer Seas which will make your adventures much more exciting.
Having access to High Seas also means that you can access endgame content such as the Pirate Legend title. By reaching level 50 reputation across all three Trading Companies, you'll attain the Pirate Legend title, allowing you to access endgame cosmetics and quests.
The title Pirate Legend cannot be unlocked without a PlayStation Plus subscription as Safer Seas only allows players to progress up until level 40 in Trading Companies. This means that there is a limit to your progression without an active subscription.
In High Seas, players can become a Trading Company Emissary by purchasing an Emissary Flag from one of the Trading Companies in the game. While flying this flag, you get more gold and reputation whenever you turn in loot to the trading company representative.

Remove Battle Scars Off Your Ship Name Your Own Ship Decorate Your Own Ship Gain Access to the Sovereigns Shipwrights Offer More Items Sail as Part of a Guild |
Perhaps one of the most important things to have when sailing the seas is owning a ship and luckily, you can buy and own a ship in the High Seas which you cannot do if you do not have a PlayStation Plus subscription.
As a captain, you can also make your guild where other players can join to unite under your cause. Sail the seas with friends, find treasure and gain infamy in the world of piracy with the guild system.
The Hourglass of Fate is an item that lets you side with Guardians of Fortune or the Servants of the Flame which will also grant you access to faction battles: a PvP mode that pits the two factions against each other.
Players will also be able to access time-limited monthly and seasonal events where players can participate to gain extra bonuses, cosmetics, unique Titles, and more Currency.
Skull of Siren Song is a Competitive Voyage available to all pirates to claim a rare artifact and weapon called the Skull of Siren Song. All crews competing in the voyage will share one map which amps up the competitiveness of this voyage.
Compete with other crews in this exciting game mode, as your crew tries to claim the one and only Skull of Siren Song.
