Whether you play Sea of Thieves on the new PS5 release, on PC with Steam/Windows, or on the Xbox, you'll need a Microsoft account to play the game and save your progress.

How to Create and Link a Microsoft Account

Go to the Xbox official site and click the Sign In button on the top-right corner of the website. This will lead you to the sign in page.

Create an account by clicking on the Create one! hyperlink to start the process. Follow the instructions to make your account and that's it!

Linking Steam Account with Xbox Live

When you start the game for the first time, you will be given the option to Sign In to Xbox Live. Click the Sign In button and enter account details.

Once you sign in, you will be shown the following prompt. Clicking Let's Play will open the Steam Overlay browser to confirm account linking. Be sure that the correct accounts are logged in before linking!

Gives Access to the Game

Sea of Thieves will require you to create and use a Microsoft Account in order to play the game. If playing on Steam (PC) or the PS5, you will also need to link your Microsoft account to your Steam or PSN account before you can play.

Carries Over Progress from Linked Accounts

Sea of Thieves is available on multiple platforms and a Microsoft account allows you to share progress between all of them. This includes cosmetics, Commendations, accumulated gold, Doubloons, and Ancient Coins!

Platform Exclusives Are Not Shared By Cross Progression

Some platform exclusives will remain unavailable for other platforms even with cross progression. For example, Duke ship cosmetics tied to the Xbox Series X|S launch will not be available for the PS5 release even if your account is shared between PS5 and Xbox consoles.

Unlocks Crossplay Features

Using a Microsoft account will grant access to crossplay between all other platforms, allowing you to add friends outside of PSN. On the PS5, you will have access to both your Xbox and PSN friend list so you can invite your friends on any platform to play with you.

Logging into your Microsoft account on the Sea of Thieves official website will allow you access to information about your character. You can check your cosmetic inventories, keep tabs on your currencies, track your Seasonal progress, and showcase Commendations!

Pirate Emporium Will Also Be Available Via the Official Site

You can also access the Pirate Emporium right on the website allowing you to browse through and buy hundreds of cosmetics for your pirate and ship without having to launch the game.
