Sea of Thieves - How to Save Your Game

Sea of Thieves does not allow you to manually save your progress when ending a game session. Find out how to save your game, as well as how to keep your gold, commendations, cosmetics, and Tall Tales progress when exiting.

How to Save Your Game Progress

Cannot Manually Save Your Game

Sea of Thieves - Selling Treasure to a Trading Company

In Sea of Thieves, there is no option to manually save your progress since it is a multiplayer game. This means that any unsold treasures or unfinished events when ending a game session won't carry over to your next play session.

It is imperative to sell the loot that you currently have before logging off in order to acquire gold that can be carried over when you return to the game.

Only Gold, Commendations, and Cosmetics Carry Over

However, if you sell the loot that you acquire from your voyage, the gold that you get from selling that treasure will carry over. Commendation progress and outfits that you have, will also carry over to your next session.

Tall Tales Have Checkpoints that Save Your Progress

Sea of Thieves - Tall Tale Checkpoint

If you're playing a Tall Tale and you're worried if there's a save option, fret not as this game mode has a checkpoint system where you can come back and start on the latest checkpoint of the Tall Tale you're playing after logging off of the game or if you cancel the Tell Tale.

Tall Tales are quests that are narrative-driven, story heavy missions that are lengthy.

Can You Rejoin an Ongoing Session?

Rejoin if Host of Game is Still Connected

If you get booted from the server while playing a game with friends, you can still return to that session as long as the host of that session is still on the server.

However, if the host decides to end the session prematurely, you will not be able to return to that session. Any loot that wasn't turned in before the session ended will be gone forever.

Event Progress is Lost if Server Goes Down

Occasionally, Sea of Thieves will announce a scheduled maintenance where the servers go down temporarily. If you are in the middle of completing a world event or turning in treasure when the server goes down, your progress will not carry over.
