Players can join a random crew in Sea of Thieves by selecting Open Crew in High Seas. Read on to learn how to join a random crew, as well as how many players can join a crew via matchmaking.
Open Crew Matchmaking Guide |
---|
|
To join a random crew, you will need to play in the High Seas game mode. This means you'll be dropping into a server with enemy player ships. Unfortunately, open crew matchmaking is not available in Safer Seas since crews are invite-only.
After selecting High Seas, charter the ship you want to sail on. Your choice of ship will determine the size of your crew. Matchmaking will attempt to fill your crew with the max number of players based on the ship type.
Ship | Crew Size |
---|---|
Sloop | 1 to 2 Players |
Brigantine | 2 to 3 Players |
Galleon | 4 Players |
How to Sail Your Ship and All Ship Types
After choosing a ship, select Open Crew to enable matchmaking. Review and confirm the session settings, then hit Set Sail to begin matchmaking.
You'll be taken to a different screen while you wait for matchmaking to fill in your crew with other players who have chosen the same session setup.
The type of ship you choose will determine how many players you'll matchmake with. Once the game has finished loading, you will spawn in an Outpost together with your crew members.
Up to four members can join a Crew. If you wish to form a group with more than 4 players, you may do so by forming an Alliance once you drop into the server.
Do note that Alliances can only be made with ships in the same server. You will not be able to form alliances with friends unless they are also playing in the same server.

The titles misleading as this isn’t “how to join a random crew” it’s “how to get randoms to join your crew” But honestly idk why I bother looking for ways since the looking for groups widget on the stupid game bar disappeared requiring you to waste space to download the eggbox app from the Microsoft store But even with the LFG widget you can’t use it for steam version as it doesn’t acknowledge the steam version for some reason
