The Journey to Melee Island Overview and Location

Find the Starting Location Beside Kate Capsize

You can start the Journey to Melee Island beside Kate Capsize, who is stationed at the Capsize Charters tent along the shore of any Outpost. Press the Vote for Tall Tale button to start the quest.

Alternatively, you can also select the The Legend of Monkey Island in the Main Menu to begin the tall tale.

Note: This Tall Tale can also be started from your quest table. However, you will still need to go to the Capsize Charters tent to formally begin the tall tale.

The Journey to Melee Island Walkthrough

Sail to the Portal and Dock at Melee Island

Once your conversation with Kate and the Pirate Lord concludes, sail towards the portal in an archway nearby. You will appear in a ghostly realm which will transport you to Melee Island.

Dock your ship at one of the piers of the island and hop off.

Talk to the Pirate Leaders and Chef at the Scumm Bar

Head inside the Scumm Bar and talk to the Pirate Leaders at their table. Afterward, speak to the Chef in the kitchen and tell him you are looking for work.

From here, you will gather information that Guybrush Theepwood is in a tightly guarded mansion and the only way to enter is to obtain a ticket from a shady merchant named Citizen of Melee.

You will also learn that the cook is hiring an assistant, but you will need a Chef's Uniform first. You will need this later on to progress the quest.

Obtain a Meet n' Greet Ticket

Speak to Citizen of Melee

Leave the Scumm Bar and go through the archway directly to your East. Follow the stone street up ahead and talk to Citizen of Melee, who is seen standing in front of his wares.

He will tell you that you will have to retrieve his missing cargo in exchange for a Meet n' Greet Ticket which grants entrance to Guybrush's mansion.

Grab the Claw Hammer at the Jail

Next, you will need to get the Claw Hammer which is sitting on a table at the Jail. The jailhouse is just down the street, past the Citizen of Melee and beside a ghostly skeleton guard.

Go to the Dockhouse with a Crate Winch

With the Claw Hammer in your possesion, run back to the docks and go to the dockhouse with a crate winch on it. Drop the Claw Hammer nearby as you will need it later on.

Attach the Winches to the Crate Underwater

Adjust the Crate Winch Height and pull it down the water. Next, go up the ladder beside you and adjust the Crate Winch Angle to the right.

Destroy the Frayed Ropes

Jump into the water and swim towards the crate. Destroy the two frayed ropes attached to it using your sword.

Retrieve the Crate of Important Goods

Adjust the Crate Winch Height and Angle once more to lift the crate out of the water, then drop it down on the dock. Use the Claw Hammer to pry it open and collect the Crate of Important Goods inside.

Turn in the Crate of Important Goods

Turn in the Crate of Important Goods to Citizen of Melee. As promised, he will give you the Meet n' Greet Ticket in exchanged for your troubles.

Show the Ticket to the Mansion Guard

Talk to the Mansion Guard near the jail and show him your ticket. However, he will not allow you entry as your appointment is midnight. The problem is, the Clock Tower is broken and never strikes midnight.

Repair the Clock Tower

Purchase and Equip Chef's Uniform

Go to the General Shop to purchase a Chef's Uniform for 45 Pieces o' Eight. Once purchased, equip it by using the Clothing Chest near the shopkeeper.

Pieces o' Eight are commonly found inside cupboards, crates, or on top of wooden barrels. Refer to our Pieces of Eight Locations section below for all their locations!

Steal the Clock Tower Key

Go back to the kitchen of the Scumm Bar while wearing the Chef's Uniform and wait for the Chef to leave. Bring out your Tankard and fill it up using the Extra-Potent Grog barrel, also found in the kitchen.

Approach the pirate with a blue bandana and pour the Grog into his glass. You will have to do this three times for him to pass out. Once he passes out, steal the Clock Tower Key from him.

Fix the Clock Tower

Proceed to the Clock Tower along the street where Citizen of Melee is located and use the Clock Tower Key to unlock it. Head upstairs to the gear room and remove the Skeleton Arm that is jamming the clock's gears.

Using the wheel in the room, rotate it to the left until both hands point midnight.

Talk to the Mansion Guard Again

Speak to the Mansion Guard again and inform him that it is midnight. He will come up with another lame excuse saying he needs to wait for his replacement before you can go inside the mansion.

Look for a Replacement for the Guard

Prepare Ingredients for Root Beer Stewed Meat

Return to the kitchen of the Scumm Bar where you will have to cook a Root Beer Stewed Meat.

To prepare this dish, add diced onions, sliced leeks, Hunk o' Meat, Caniche Mordant Flower, and Root Beer Sprinkles into the boiling pot. These ingredients are all found in the kitchen.

Fish for a Red Herring and Put it in the Pot

The last ingredient is a Red Herring which you will have to fish for by the pier, outside the kitchen's door. Use the Kitchen Door Key to open it and start fishing for a Red Herring.

Once caught, add it to the cooking pot and then take the Root Beer Stewed Meat.

Fishing Guide: How to Catch Fish

Feed the Poodles and Take the Gunpowder Gummies

Proceed to the Church, which is near the Jail, and go through the alley right beside it. Place the Root Beer Stewed Meat on the dogbowl near the poodles.

Wait for the poodles to become aggressive and attack Walt. Grab the Gunpowder Gummies on the bench where Walt was sitting.

Blow Up the Jail Cell Doors

Purchase the Gunpowder Fuses for 70 Pieces o' Eight at the General Shop and go to the Jail. Place the Gunpowder Gummies and the fuses on Otis's jail cell door.

Raise your Lantern to ignite the fuse and watch as the jail doors explode. Otis will go on with his dramatic monologue before dropping his pet coconut, Captain Coco.

Do the same on the other cell door where you will find a skeleton arm, which you will need later on.

Take the Femur Bone from Spiffy

Purchase the Cute Monkey Toy from Citizen for 60 Pieces o' Eight and go to Spiffy the dog at the Scumm Bar. Switch the toy with the Femur Bone in Spiffy's mouth.

Attach the Femur Bone to Walt's Body

With the Femur Bone at hand, Return to the alleyway beside the church and attach it to Walt's lifeless skeleton body.

Attach the Skeleton Arms to Walt's Body

Take the Skeleton Left Arm found in the empty cell and attach it to Walt's body. Go back to the Clock Tower to retrieve the Skeleton Right Arm and again connect it to Walt's body.

Attach Murray to Walt's Body

Pick up Captain Coco that Otis dropped earlier and return to Scumm Bar. Go to the hanging skulls in the bar and switch Murray's place with Captain Coco. Take Murray to Walt's body and attach him on it.

Proceed to the Mansion

Now that Murray will act as the mansion's replacement guard, you can finally enter the mansion. Accompany Murray to the mansion guard where he will relieve him of his duties. Proceed through the entrance of the mansion and enter it.

Knock on Guybrush's Door Five Times

Go up the grand staircase and knock on Guybrush's office door five times to open it. He will let out a long and boring speech before dozing off on his chair.

Obtain Elaine's Letter

Proceed to Guybrush's bedroom and open the curtains. Pull up the sheets on the bed and take Elaine's Letter.

Don't forget to also pick up the Mighty Pirate Chest Key and use it on the chest near the bed. Inside you will find root beer bottles. Pick one up and LeChuck's ghostly ship will appear out on the shore.

Defeat LeChuck's Pirates

Go outside to find LeChuck. After he is finished talking, you will have to fight your way through hordes of ghostly pirates using a Root Beer Bottle.

Hold down the Secondary Use button to shake the bottle up and then press the Primary Use button to spray its contents on the pirates. The longer you shake the bottle, the more effective it will be on the pirates!

Talk to Corina at Her Shop

Once all ghostly pirates have been defeated, Corina's shop in town will open. Her shop is the one with green lanterns outside.

Place the Root Beer Bottle in the cauldron and Corina will appear and start talking to you. After this, you have one last chance to finish up your business on the island such as getting all Commendations.

If you want to leave already, talk to Corina again and she will transport you back to Sea of Thieves, ending the Journey to Melee Island tall tale.

Lookout Point

Climb up the trail south west of the docks until you see an Old Man at the Lookout Point. Tell him there is a ship coming ashore and steal the Pieces o' Eight on the ledge near him while he's not looking at you.

Thirsty Pirates in Scumm Bar

Equip the Chef's Uniform and use the Tankard at the barrel in the kitchen. Fill up both Thirsty Pirates' glasses with grog three times until they pass out and steal the Pieces o' Eight from them.

Beside Walt in the Alleyway

You will need to get rid of Walt first before you are able to steal the Pieces o' Eight beside him. Once you have the Root Beer Stewed Meat, place it at the bowl and watch as the poodles jump on Walt. With Walt gone, grab the Pieces o' Eight on top of the barrel.
