To begin the Curse Rogue Tall Tale, head to Madame Olivia's Stall in Plunder Outpost (J-18). Interact with the purple book next to her to start the quest, or vote for it on the ship if you're playing with friends.
Map Coordinates | J-18 |

To start the Cursed Rogue Tall Tale, head to the Plunder Outpost located in The Ancient Isles. The Plunder Outpost is directly below the Ancient Isles text on the map, so it shouldn't be too difficult to find. It also has two large peaks above it, so make sure to keep an eye out for them when sailing south. You can also follow the coordinates J-18 to find the island.
Once you've reached the Plunder Outpost, head to Madame Olivia's tent and interact with the purple book next to her counter to start the Tall Tale.
Examine the book to find out where the Skeleton Key is located. The book will display the shape of the island and its location within the Ancient Isles, so simply follow the directions to locate it.
Keep in mind that all islands indicated in the book are randomized per session, including the location of Captain Briggsy and the Skeleton Chest later on. You may be directed to an island in the north, west, east, or south, so make sure to read the passages in the book to get a clearer direction of where to look.
Clues | Island |
---|---|
Northern Ancient Isles | Castaway Island (K-14) |
Northern Ancient Isles | Snake Island (K-16) |
North Eastern Ancient Isles | Barnacle Cay (O-15) |
Eastern Ancient Isles | Devil's Ridge (P-19) |
Southern Ancient Isles | Shark Bait Cove (H-19) |
Southern Shores a Plenty | Wanderers Refuge (F-12) |
Once you arrive at your designated island, read the book again to see where Captain Avery is camping. Depending on the island, you can either find his camp at the very top of a cliff or inside a cave.
To get the Skeleton Key, you must first defeat Captain Avery. Clearing out Captain Avery's crew isn't necessary. You can simply focus on defeating him, even if you're playing solo. However, if it becomes too difficult, feel free to clear out his skeleton friends to minimize any incoming attacks.
Open the Tall Tale Quest Book again to find the location of the Skeleton Chest. As mentioned earlier, the location of the Skeleton Chest will be randomized, so be sure to follow the instructions carefully. You can use the shape of the islands in the book as a reference.
Clues | Island |
---|---|
Northern Ancient Isles | Crook's Hollow (M-16) |
Western Ancient Isles | Discovery Ridge (E-17) |
Western Ancient Isles Features a bird shrine. |
Plunder Valley (G-16) |

Southern Ancient Isles Find a place to bury the chest! (Right side of the page) |
Lookout Point (I-20) |
Similar to the Skeleton Key, the Skeleton Chest will also be guarded by a Captain. This time, it's Captain Blake. Make sure to defeat him before you start digging up the chest.
Once you have the chest, open it to retrieve the Star Map and a Broken Spyglass. After that, go back to Plunder Outpost (J-18) to deliver these items to Madame Olivia in order to obtain the Enchanted Compass.
After receiving the Enchanted Compass, follow the indicated direction to locate Captain Briggsy. Continue moving in the direction indicated by the Enchanted Compass until you reach the island. If the compass changes direction, you may have already passed by the island, so be sure to backtrack in case you missed it.
Similar to the other islands in the book, her location will also be randomized, with the compass serving as your sole guide.
Once you're on the designated island, follow the compass again to locate Captain Briggsy. Like the other Captains, she will be camping with her crew and will attack upon approach. However, as the final boss of this Tall Tale, she will be very difficult to defeat. She sends an overwhelming amount of skeleton crews to attack you.
After defeating Captain Briggsy, take her skull and complete the Tall Tale by delivering it to Madame Olivia.
Tips to Beat Captain Briggsy | |
---|---|
|
A good way to prepare before Captain Briggsy's battle is to eat Cooked Meat. This fills out the skull meter next to your HP bar, allowing you to heal passively during combat.
It's an effective way to continue fighting without needing to take breaks to recover HP by eating fruits. This is also particularly useful when playing solo.
Captain Briggsy will use her AoE explosion that can knock you back and deal damage depending on your distance from her. The closer you are to her, the more damage you'll take. Once you see her charge, it's best to avoid her to minimize the damage.
Since fighting close is dangerous, especially with how damaging her AoE attack is, it's best to only use ranged weapons and refrain from using melee weapons.
When fighting Captain Briggsy, there will always be nearby ammo crates and food barrels. Use the ammo crate to infinitely reload your gun and continue attacking her from a distance. Additionally, if you're running low on HP, loot the barrels for food and consume them to recover.
When Captain Briggsy summons a hoard of skeletons, make sure to take down all of them first to minimize the pressure. If possible, prioritize the skeletons with guns as they're the most likely to hit you due to their range advantage.
Additionally, these skeletons will drop ammo pouches, which you can use to reload your own gun and spam your own gunshots against Briggsy.
One of the most common strategies used by many players is to lure her close to your ship so you can use your cannons to attack her. This is one of the ways to deal heavier damage, and since skeletons can't swim, you can minimize the pressure this way from her hoard.
No. | All The Cursed Rogue Journal Locations |
---|---|

3 | At last, a clue! |
4 | Closing In |
5 | Defeated?! |
You can find A New Prey on one of the islets of Shark Bait Cove, inside a broken raft next to a cave opening. Shark Bait Cove is at coordinates H-19.
The Surrounded By Fools journal is located at the northernmost area of Discovery Ridge, also inside a broken raft. To find Discovery Ridge, follow the coordinates E-17 on the map.
The next journal, At Last, A Clue!, is located in the middle of Kraken's Falls around the pile of skulls. You can find Kraken Falls by following the coordinates R-12.
The Closing In journal is located in Wanderer's Refuge, at coordinates F-12 on the map. You can find it in the ruins, stuck between planks under two coconut trees.
Finally, the last journal, Defeated?!, is located in Crook's Hollow, inside the cave across from the docks. Head deep inside the cave until you find a burnt-out campfire and a skeleton. The journal should be there. Crook's Hollow is at coordinates M-16 on the map.
