Sea of Thieves - How to Get Ancient Coins

Ancient Coins are a premium in-game currency that are used to buy various items and cosmetics in Sea of Thieves. Read on to see how to get Ancient Coins and all ways you can get Ancient Coins for free.

How to Get Ancient Coins

These are all the current methods you can earn Ancient Coin in Sea of Thieves:

  1. Level Up Season Renown
  2. Purchase from Steam or Microsoft Store
  3. Purchase from Pirate Emporium
  4. Defeat Ancient Skeletons
  5. Redeem With Microsoft Rewards

Level Up Season Renown

The quickest way to earn Ancient Coins for free is to participate in the current Season. By earning Renown and leveling up your Renown rank, you will often earn Ancient Coin Caches and Ancient Coin Hoards as rewards.

Access the Season screen by opening up your menu, heading to the Pirate Log tab, and selecting the current Season.

Purchase Plunder Pass for Additional Coins

Plunder Pass
Leveling up Renown in the free version of the Season may earn up to 250 Ancient Coins but purchasing the Plunder Pass will grant you an additional 750 Ancient Coins per Season, on top of other exclusive rewards.

Purchase from Steam or Microsoft

Ancient Coins can be bought from the online store where you purchased Sea of Thieves. Head to the Sea of Thieves Steam page or the game's Microsoft/Xbox Store page to see all Ancient Coin in-app purchases.

Microsoft / Xbox Store

Microsoft Store - Ancient Coins
Search for Sea of Thieves and open up its page. Then, scroll down to the section that says "Add-ons for this game". Here, you will be able to find a list of all Ancient Coin in-app purchases.

Note that you obtain a 10% discount on all Ancient Coin purchases if you have an Xbox Game Pass currently active.

Steam Page

Steam Store - Ancient Coins
Open up the Steam page of Sea of Thieves then scroll down to the "Items Available For This Game" section, where you will find a list of all Ancient Coin in-app purchases.

Purchase from Pirate Emporium

Pirate Emporium
Ancient Coins can be purchased from the Pirate Emporium, which is a shop that can be found on every Outpost. Talk to the shop owner, browse their wares, head to the Pirate Emporium tab and select "Purchase Ancient Coins" on the bottom right.

You may also access the Pirate Emporium anywhere in the world from your menu.

Defeat Ancient Skeletons

Ancient Skeletons

Ancient Skeletons are rare spawns that drop Ancient Coins. These skeletons can be distinguished by the large sack of Ancient Coins they carry on their backs and can be fought in both High Seas and Safer Seas.

Make sure to defeat any Ancient Skeleton that appears. However, defeating them is not a viable method of farming Ancient Coins due to their low spawn rate.

Redeem With Microsoft Rewards

Microsoft Rewards - Ancient Coins
You can earn 150 Ancient Coins by redeeming 1,700 points at Microsoft Rewards. Points can be earned by participating in Microsoft's rewards system and completing its various daily activities.
