Sludge can be removed using water attacks in Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment. Read on to learn how to clear sludge, which characters have water attacks, the effects of sludge, and a list of missions with sludge hazards.
The easiest way to clear sludge using any character is to use the Hydrant Zonai device. The Hydrant shoots out water, allowing it to clear any sludge it hits and deal water damage to enemies.
However, the Hydrant drains your Zonai device battery, so this may not be the best way to clear sludge from a large area.

Most of Qia's strong attacks and all of her unique skills are imbued with water, allowing them to wash away sludge. It is recommended to use strong attacks instead of unique skills to clear sludge, since skills have a cooldown time.
Qia's 2nd, 4th, 5th, and 6th strong attacks are water attacks, so aim for these when doing attack combos. You can uprgade her basic actions more through Qia Quests, but the placement of the water attacks in combo sequences will not be changed.
Qia Combat Guide and How to Unlock
Calamo has various elements tied to his strong attacks, which makes him a good character to use if you're facing multiple enemies with different elemental weaknesses.
His 5th strong attack has him chuck a Splash Fruit, which serves as his water attack. To execute this attack, press Y 4 times before pressing X for the strong attack.

Having a character sync strike with Qia (other than Zelda and the Knight Construct) will envelop that character in a protective water bubble and infuse their attacks with water.
If Qia is the one you're controlling when doing a non-unique sync strike, she can shoot out a torrent of water, which you can aim using the left stick. Her unique sync strikes with Zelda and the Knight Construct also make use of water to attack the enemies.
These sync strike attacks are best used against sludge-covered enemies to quickly drain their weak-point gauge and remove their protective sludge armor.
You will move much slower while walking through a sludge-covered area. It's best to either avoid sludge on the ground or wash them off, especially if you're trying to beat a time limit.
Sludge doesn't have any long-term or health-draining effects, so it's more of an inconvenience. However, sludge can become a problem when fighting enemies, since it may hinder your attacks.

Enemies covered in sludge are harder to defeat, since sludge acts as a protective armor for them. However, these enemies are weak to water attacks.
Bombarding them with water attacks can help reveal their Weak-Point Gauge. Depleting their Weak-Point Gauge will clear the sludge from the enemy, leaving them vulnerable. However, they can cover themselves in sludge again if you don't manage to defeat them after a period of time.
How to Exploit Enemy Weaknesses

Sludge can prevent you from interacting with Korok hiding spots or treasure chests if they're covered—even partially—by it. You must wash away the sludge covering them first before you can get the chest contents or Korok Seed.
