The Big Battery Zonai device is also available in all flight mode battles. This recharges your device batteries once you pick it up.

During flight battles, you move and aim using the Left Stick. Aiming can be set to the Right Stick if you turn on advanced flight-mode aiming in the Options menu, under Controls Settings.

You can attack using the Zonai devices assigned to the ZL and ZR buttons or by using the Light Beam with R if you don't want to use up your batteries. You can also hold the attack buttons for a steady beam or stream of attacks.

When facing powerful boss enemies in this mode, you can still perform a Weak-Point Smash upon depleting their Weak-Point Gauge. Once the boss's HP is depleted, you will be prompted to hold the ZL and ZR buttons to perform a finisher and defeat the boss.

Collect Zonai Devices

Into the Fray Getting Zonai Devices

Zonai devices will be floating around the stage, available to collect as you go along. You can also get Zonai devices from defeating enemies and destroying terrain.

Two offensive Zonai devices can be equipped at a time, being assigned to your ZL and ZR buttons. Collecting duplicates of a Zonai device will increase its level, enhancing their capabilities. However, getting hit and taking damage may reduce the level of an attached Zonai device.

The Zonai devices you can obtain in a flight mode battle stage are fixed, but if you obtain multiple types of Zonai devices, you can change which you have equipped by pressing the Right D-Pad button.

Two-Player Flight Mode Battles

What Are Flight Mode Battles?

Space-Shooter-Style Gameplay

locking on multiple enemies with Rocket

Unlike the combat action gameplay of the regular battle missions, flight mode battles use a shooter-style gameplay. While in flight mode, the Mysterious Construct fires at approaching enemies using its attached Zonai devices or light beam. Enemy attacks can be countered by shooting at them, dodging, or flying out of the way.

This battle mode has more limited actions available as well as a limited character availability.

Calamo and Knight Construct Stages

Calamo and the Knight Construct

During flight mode battles, the only characters you can use are Calamo and the Mysterious/Knight Construct. However, since the gameplay style is different, they won't play the same as in regular battles. You won't need to use their weapons, attacks, or skills during flight mode battles, and Calamo is only used when in two-player mode.
