As part of the Musou or Hack-n-Slash genre, and like its' predecessors, Age of Imprisonment will put more mobs around the player in several zones called Outposts that you will have to defeat to progress. Expect more combat over this game than your usual Zelda title!

Part of the game's mechanics involve controlling
outposts in the map, allowing you to have more map control, which is your ultimate endgame for most of the areas in the game. Capture Outposts by taking down mobs, eliminating their bosses or by doing objectives.
Dangerous Stronger-type enemies are presented in the overworld with a special health bar, a weakness gauge and a red glow for some of their attacks. Prioritize them whenever they are in the map and whenever you are ready, as taking them down will make outposts easier to capture or may even skip some combat sections entirely!
Move constantly in combat to avoid getting swarmed by enemies! This is the easiest tip to avoid losing fights in hack-n-slash games, so keep on attacking and avoid having downtime with your offense!

Use your characters' Unique Skills whenever you are presented the chance to, especially to counter against dangerous enemies to immediately turn the tide of combat! Watch your opponent's moves to see when they would be most effective.

Other than unique skill attributes, elements can also be used against enemies with a weakness to them. Using an element or attribute that the enemy is weak to will allow you to expose its Weak-Point Gauge. Depleting this gauge will then allow you to perform a Weak-Point Smash to deal a lot of damage.
Elements Explained: How to Exploit Enemy Weaknesses
The game allows you to Block by holding the ZL button, allowing you to mitigate attacks that connect with your character. You can also dodge by pressing the B button.
If you manage to execute a perfect dodge, you will be able to performa Flurry Rush, which allows you to hit the enemy multiple times without fear of getting hit back.

Perform Sync Strikes by pressing the L button whenever two nearby characters have their sync gauges full (shown in the character screen on the left). These attacks are powerful finishers that can obliterate mobs or deal massive damage to boss enemies.
Press the D-Pad buttons to switch characters around! Make sure to frequently do this in combat to make sure you get a feel for how they play, allowing you to master their moveset and be in-tune with their attacks.
List of All Characters and How to Unlock Them

Make sure to finish the different Challenges, Aside Quests, and Quests that present itself in the game. These quests will reward you with upgrades for your characters, materials, weapons and more!
