Using compatible elements on enemies afflicted by status conditions will break them out of their status condition, dealing a lot of damage onto them and their Weak-Point Gauge.
Elemental Chains are caused by having two compatible elements interact with each other. You can do this by using Zonai devices, element-infused strong attacks, elemental unique skills, sync strikes, or even by making use of your surrounding environment such as natural puddles.
It usually doesn't matter which element you use first, as long as both elements combine with one another, except for element chains that require enemies to have status effects afflicted on them.

Zonai devices are the easiest way to use elemental chains against enemies. All characters have access to Zonai devices, they're easy to use, and can even be set down while you pull another Zonai device out.
Just make sure you have enough battery when using these devices. You can get more batteries from crates during battles.

The Sages—Raphica, Qia, Agraston, and Ardi—and Calamo all have elements imbued into their strong attacks and some of their skills. This makes them the perfect characters to make use of elemental chains.
The Mysterious Construct can also infuse elements to their strong attacks if you assign Zonai devices to them. Another unique skill they have is the ability to use monster parts as attacks, so you can use monster parts with elements imbued into them such as the Ice-Breath Lizalfos Horn to try and chain elements.
Hitting an enemy afflicted by a status condition with a compatible elemental attack also counts as an elemental chain. Doing this allows you to quickly deplete the enemy's Weak-Point Gauge and allow you to deal a lot of damage.

These are all the Zonai devices and characters that can use the respective elements against enemies. These characters make use of the corresponding element in their strong attacks, special attacks, and some of their unique skills.
Unlike the other elements, Light does not appear to have any special reaction when combined with other elements.
