The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild (BotW) Thunderblight Ganon

This is a guide to the Thunderblight Ganon boss fight in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (BotW).

How to Beat Thunderblight Ganon

Like all Ganon fights, this battle has two phases. Thunderblight Ganon's attack pattern will change after you get his HP down to 50%, so watch his moves carefully. In the second phase, Thunderblight Ganon will summon electricity to his axe, making his melee attacks electric. Like Guardians, try to aim for his eye.

Thunderblight Ganon moves quickly, and unlike other Ganon fights, he will keep rushing to you for an attack. Do your best to parry and do perfect dodges, so you have the opportunity to attack back.

Thunderblight Ganon Phase 1 Strategy

Dash and Slice
Thunderblight Ganon quickly dashes in a zigzag motion by teleporting, and slices his axe. Move away, or do a perfect dodge or parry to attack back. If you plan on blocking his attack, make sure that you are facing him by reseting your focus.

Three Electric Balls
He swings his axe to summon three balls of electricity in your direction. Simply move away to avoid them.

Dodge and Parry

The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild (BotW) Parry Thunderblight Ganon
With his shield up, you will not be able to shoot him with your bow. The best way to attack is to let him attack you, and by successfully dodging or parrying, you will have an opportunity to strike back.

Use a Good Shield to Block Attacks

The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild (BotW) - Use a Good Shield
If your having a hard time deflecting his attack with a dodge and parry make sure that you have a good shield, like the Guardian Shield++, equipped to Block it instead. Blocking his attack will cause him to get knocked back, giving you the opportunity to strike back and break his shield.

Use Fast Weapons

The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild (BotW) - Use Light Weapons
Make sure to use fast weapons like Swords and Spears during this fight. The enemy is fast and wont wait for you to attack. Having a fast weapon will let you get a lot of hits in, breaking his shield faster. It is highly recommended to have a sword and shield combo so you can quickly switch between attacking and defending.

List of Weapons

Destroy His Shield

Use a strong weapon and keep attacking him until you break his shield. This will knock him out, giving you more time to deal damage.

Thunderblight Ganon Phase 2 Strategy

Electrocuted Metal Pillars
At the start of Phase 2, Thunderblight Ganon be levitating and will have shield that will stop damage. He will drop metal pillars in your area, and casts electricity on them. Staying close to one will electrocute you, so move away.

To counter it, use Magnesis and drag a pillar to Ganon to electrocute him, breaking his shield and making him crash down.

Multiple Slices
Similar to the first phase; he dashes to your direction, but slices his axe multiple times. Move away, or dodge or parry to attack back.

If your planning to Block his attack, keep an eye out on his weapon if it is electrified. Make sure to avoid clashing with him when it is since this will stun you if you don't have electric resistance.

Electric Dash and Slice
He raises his axe to summon lightning, and dashes to you. He may slash once or multiple times, and the slashes have lightning. Move away, or dodge or parry to attack back.

When he summons the electric balls after his shield breaks take this chance to hit him with Arrow Bombs to deal more damage.

Laser
Like Guardians, he will prepare a laser that follows you. You can hide behind pillars around the map, jump away in time, or try to deflect the beam back at him for additional damage.

Stay Close at the Start of the Phase

The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild (BotW) - Stay close at the Start of the Phase
During the start of the second phase, equip your Magnesis as soon as possible, and keep a close distance to Thunderblight Ganon. When he drops the pillars, it will be easy to drag one to him to break his shield if you are near.

Buff Your Electricity Resistance After Breaking His Shield

The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild (BotW) - Buff Electricity Resistance
After breaking his shield with the pillar, quickly buff yourself with Electricity Resistance before the start of the melee fight. This is especially helpful if you don't have any gear that resist or negates shock and electricity.

Use Arrow Bombs When his Shield is Broken

The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild (BotW) - Use Arrow Bombs
During the melee portion of Phase 2 you can use Arrow Bombs to deal damage to Ganon after breaking his shield.
