Black Ops 7 Story Explained
Alex Mason's Black Ops
The Black Ops story begins with Alex Mason, one of the series’ central characters. In the 1960s, Mason is brainwashed as a Russian sleeper agent, although he eventually breaks out and works to stop major chemical attack plots against the United States.
In the 1980s, Mason and his longtime ally Frank Woods become deeply involved in a CIA hunt for Nicaraguan arms dealer Raul Menendez, a major antagonist whose actions and ideology eventually set the world on a path toward chaos.
David Mason Hunts Down Menendez
In Black Ops 2 (set in 2025), Raul Menendez reaches the height of his power. He starts a worldwide uprising and launches cyberattacks and terrorism on major countries, culminating in a plan to hijack the US Drone Fleet to cause catastrophic destruction. David "Section" Mason, Alex Mason's son, is now the one leading the hunt for Menendez.
The story reveals the truth behind Alex Mason’s death and shows how Woods mentored David Mason throughout his Special Operations career.
By the end of the campaign, the main protagonist, David Mason, kills Menendez, stopping the drone hijack plot. Although Menendez’s plan fails, his ideological influence continues to spread even a decade later in 2035, setting the stage for the events of Black Ops 7.
Menendez' Posthumously Starts Another Crisis 10 Years Later
In 2035, the Black Ops 7 campaign opens with a new, posthumous message from Menendez, inspiring his followers to begin a new uprising. Midway through the campaign, it is revealed that the Menendez message was never actually created by him. Instead, it is an A.I. deepfake generated by the true antagonists, Kagan and her Guild, to incite chaos for their own gain.
The Cradle: Hallucinatory Bioweapon
The criminal organization Guild unleashes a secret bioweapon, the Cradle, inducing intense and nightmarish hallucinations when inhaled. Mason and his team are exposed to the gas multiple times throughout the story, forcing them to relive traumatic memories within surreal, distorted hallucination sequences.
Linked through a shared cerebral interface, the team experiences the hallucinations together, battling through each distorted scenario as they fight zombies and other horrors to escape.
Stopping Kagan From Releasing the Cradle
In the final mission, the squad successfully destroys a ship housing large amounts of the Cradle bioweapon and thwarts Kagan’s plan to unleash it worldwide. Kagan is captured, but the Guild remains active. In the ending cutscene, a new major antagonist, Dorne, emerges as the new leader of the Guild.
Dorne: The Endgame Antagonist
The mysterious new antagonist, Dorne, occasionally communicates with you during the Endgame as you sabotage Guild operations. What he will do next in the story remains to be seen. With Kagan captured, he now serves not just as the Guild’s right hand, but both hands.
Black Ops 7 Characters and Setting
Avalon - Year 2035
The main campaign and Endgame take place in the year 2035, 10 years after the events of Black Ops 2. Set in Avalon, a fictional island located in the Mediterranean region.

Karma is another ally in Black Ops 2 who makes a return as a JSOC operative and hacker for the squad. |
 Troy Marshall |
Marshall returns in Black Ops 7 from the previous installment, now an officer in JSOC who works with Mason and his team. |
How Karma and Harper Are Still Alive
In Black Ops 2, Karma and Harper's fate depends on player choices. In most standard BO2 playthroughs, either Karma or Harper dies during the story, yet both are alive in BO7. The following scenario is an alternative route to explain why they both appear in Black Ops 7:
In Mission 6 of BO2, Karma is captured. Players can rescue her, but doing so creates a timeline where either Harper or Karma must die. If the player fails to rescue her, she is imprisoned, and her fate is never explained. This may explain her return in Black Ops 7 alongside Harper.
