Strategy
Like the goldshard, the onyxshard shoots out its rock-hard spines, but this kemono is also able to attack by conjuring rock out of the ground. You need to keep a close eye on the kemono's movements and signs that the ground is about to rip open in order to evade the onslaught. Even at a distance, this wily beast can summon rock right under your feet, so you need to stay alert at all times.

How to Beat Onyxshard

Onyxshard Tips and Strategies

Avoid Using Fire and Earth-Based Weapons

Wild Hearts - Avoid Using Fire and Earth-Based Weapons
Like the Goldshard, the Fire and Earth attributes are not effective on the Onyxshard, so we recommend avoiding using weapons with these elements.

If your primary weapon currently wields one of these elements, consider rolling it back and upgrading to a node with Wood, Wind, or no elemental attributes instead.

Aim for the Onyxshard's Head and Tail

Wild Hearts - Aim for the Onyxshard
The Onyxshard's weakest part is its head, so prioritize dealing damage to this area as often as possible, especially after knocking it down. In addition, if staying close to its head is too risky, we recommend targeting its tail instead since it's softer than its body and legs.

Stay Alert for Underground Attacks

Wild Hearts - Stay Alert for Underground Attacks (Onyxshard)
While it shares many moves with the Goldshard, the Onyxshard also has several attacks that cause stone spikes to erupt underground and beneath the hunter. Stay alert for when these attacks occur and quickly evade out of their radius to avoid the incoming stone spikes.

Utilize Chain Trap and Shield Wall Karakuri

Wild Hearts - Utilize Chain Trap and Shield Wall Karakuri
The Onyxshard repositions frequently and attacks from different angles throughout the fight. We recommend keeping it in place with a Chain Trap Karakuri and interrupting its rolling attacks with a Shield Wall Karakuri to pin it down and leave it open for easy damage.

You can awaken the Shield Wall Karakuri when fighting the Goldshard by bringing Spring and Crate Karakuri and unlock the Chain Trap Karakuri when fighting the Deathstalker by bringing Crate and Stake Karakuri.

Onyxshard Attacks and Moves

Name Description
Onyxshard Charge The Onyxshard rapidly runs toward the hunter to tackle them with its massive body.
Spinning Hop The Onyxshard hops forward while spinning around, releasing a volley of spines behind it as it lands.
Laying Spine Thrust The Onyxshard lies down before thrusting its spine-covered back toward the hunter.
Tail Slam The Onyxshard lifts its tail and forcefully slams it down, causing causing stone spikes to erupt and knocking hunters away.
Stone Spike Attacks The Onyxshard can cause stone spikes to erupt beneath the hunter and in the area around it.
Spine Volley Attacks The Onyxshard launches massive stony spines from its back to impale and crush the hunter.
Rolling Attacks The Onyxshard rolls toward the hunter to crush them with its massive body and spine-covered back.
Furious Spine Quake When the Onyxshard becomes enraged, it can cause massive spines to erupt from the ground around it.

Onyxshard Charge

Onyxshard Charge Attack Information
Onyxshard Charge: The Onyxshard roars at the hunter before rapidly running toward them to tackle them with its massive body, knocking them back and dealing moderate damage on hit. Watch for the attack's unique windup and reposition out of the kemono's path with a dodge or Spring Karakuri.

Spinning Hop

Spinning Hop Attack Information
Spinning Hop: The Onyxshard stomps its front paws before hopping forward and spinning around, releasing a volley of spines behind it as it lands. This move has a subtle tell and comes out quite fast, so stay alert whenever it occurs and quickly evade out of the Onyxshard's path to avoid getting hit.

Laying Spine Thrust

Laying Spine Thrust Attack Information
Laying Spine Thrust: The Onyxshard lies down on the ground, positioning its back toward the hunter and thrusting its massive spines toward them up to two times. This attack has a short effective range, so reposition out of its path with a dodge or Spring Karakuri, then counterattack while the kemono leaves itself open.

Tail Slam

Tail Slam Attack Information
Tail Slam: The Onyxshard can lift its tail and slam it down, knocking nearby hunters away and causing stone spikes to erupt from the earth. Stay alert for this attack whenever you deal continuous damage to its tail.

Stone Spike Attacks

Stone Spike Attack Variations
Spike-Sprout Slam: The Onyxshard repeatedly hits the ground before performing two alternating paw slams that cause stony spikes to erupt beneath the hunter, knocking them away and dealing moderate damage on hit. Avoid the sprouting stones by evading each time a paw slam connects with the ground.
Spike Cluster Eruption: The Onyxshard swipes its paw toward the hunter, causing a cluster of stone spikes to rise in their direction. The erupting stones burst erratically from the ground, so it's best to avoid this attack by rapidly sprinting sideways or repositioning with a Spring Karakuri.

Note that the Onyxshard can sometimes follow this move with a Laying Spine Thrust, so prepare to dodge this follow-up attack whenever it occurs.
Erupting Body Slam Combo: The Onyxshard places its paws on the ground, causing a ring of stony spikes to erupt around its body. Afterward, it jumps in the air to slam its spiny back down on the hunter, dealing heavy damage on contact.

To deal with this combo, quickly sprint away from the Onyxshard to avoid the sprouting spikes, then use a Spring Karakuri or well-timed dodge to escape its follow-up body slam.

Spine Volley Attacks

Spine Volley Attack Variations
Forward Spine Volley: The Onyxshard lets out a short roar before sending up to two volleys of stone-like spines toward the hunter, dealing moderate damage on contact. The spines cover a wide range in front of the kemono, so we recommend using a Spring Karakuri or a well-timed dodge to avoid getting hurt.
Backward Spine Volley: The Onyxshard turns around before launching a cluster of spines on top of the hunter. Stay alert when the Onyxshard turns its back toward you and quickly evade out of the spines' path to avoid getting hit.
Hopping Spine Barrage: The Onyxshard repeatedly sends barrages of stony spikes toward the hunter while hopping sideways to reposition itself. Repeatedly evade sideways out of each barrage's path to avoid getting hurt by this attack.

Note that the Onyxshard can end this move with a Spine Nova, so prepare to dodge this final attack before launching a counterattack.
Spine Nova: The Onyxshard curls up before releasing a volley of rocky spines around its body, knocking back and damaging any hunters caught in the nova's radius. Quickly sprint or use a Spring Karakuri to reposition away from the kemono to avoid getting hit by this attack.

Rolling Attacks

Rolling Attack Variations
Backward Roll: The Onyxshard stands on its front legs before rolling backward to crush any hunters sticking too close behind it, dealing moderate damage on contact. Stay alert for the attack's unique windup and quickly evade away from the kemono's path with a well-timed dodge or Spring Karakuri.
Slam and Roll Combo: The Onyxshard performs two alternating paw slams before rolling toward the hunter to crush them with its spine-covered back.

To deal with this attack, dodge each paw swipe as it comes out, then reposition away from the Onyxshard's path with a well-timed evade or Spring Karakuri.
Onyxshard Rollout: The Onyxshard stands on its hind legs before rapidly rolling toward the hunter to crush them with its spine-covered back, dealing moderate damage on hit. This move takes a linear path, so evade or reposition with a Spring Karakuri out of the kemono's way to avoid the attack.
Rapid Onyxshard Rollout: While enraged, the Onyxshard can spin in place, storing energy before rapidly launching itself toward the hunter, dealing massive damage on contact. To deal with this attack, we recommend dodging or using a Spring Karakuri just as it launches toward you or utilizing a Shield Wall Karakuri to stop the kemono in its tracks.

Furious Spine Quake

Furious Spine Quake Attack Information
Furious Spine Quake: Like the Goldshard, when the Onyxshard becomes enraged, it charges up with massive spines before flipping over and landing on its back, causing the spines to erupt from the ground around it. Quickly evade backward or use a Spring Karakuri to reposition away from the kemono while it performs this attack.
