The gritdog uses the magnetic field produced by the build-up of ferrous material in its tail to manipulate ironsand for some powerful attacks. Be especially careful of the karakuri-like structures it conjures if angered. When its ironsand reserves are depleted, however, it leaves itself open to attack for a considerable time as it restocks. That's the moment to strike, and strike hard. |

Gritdog Tips and Strategies |
---|
|
The Gritdog's weakest part is its head, so prioritize dealing damage to this area as often as possible, especially after knocking it down. However, if staying near its head is too risky, you can deal safer and more consistent damage by targeting its body during openings.
The Gritdog has a handful of attacks that come from underground, indicated by dark patches on the ground or black particles forming around the kemono. Stay alert for these indicators and quickly evade out of their radius to avoid the incoming iron spikes.
We recommend regularly utilizing the Elemental Lantern Karakuri, which awakens during the Gritdog encounter. This Fusion Karakuri weakens all of the Gritdog's elemental attacks, which may be enough to save you from potential deaths.
If you get caught in the Gritdog's magnetizing Belly Drum move, you can escape its attack radius by utilizing Spring Karakuri. Use multiple springs in a row or time a well-placed spring right before the Belly Drum attack finishes to avoid getting hit.

Enraged Ironsand Attacks | While enraged, the Gritdog gains access to more dangerous ironsand-based attacks. |
Pouncing Tackle Attack Information |
---|
Pouncing Tackle: The Gritdog stands on its hind legs before quickly pouncing at the hunter to tackle them with its heavy body, dealing heavy damage on contact. To avoid getting hit by this attack, dodge sideways out of its path just as the Gritdog leaps toward you. |
Belly Flop Attack Information |
---|
Belly Flop: The Gritdog leaps high in the air toward the hunter, staying airborne for a short period before slamming its body down, dealing heavy damage on hit. Sprint and dodge away from the belly flop's radius to avoid getting hit. |
Swipe and Roll Combo Attack Information |
---|
Swipe and Roll Combo: The Gritdog performs two quick paw swipes before rolling forward to crush the hunter with its massive tail, dealing moderate to heavy damage with each hit. To deal with this attack, dodge away from each paw swipe. Afterward, evade in a straight line toward the Gritdog, as the rolling tail slam has some tracking properties. |
Reckless Charge Attack Information |
---|
Reckless Charge: The Gritdog scratches at the ground numerous times before rapidly charging toward the hunter, recklessly throwing its massive body toward them to deal heavy damage on contact. Utilize a Bulwark Karakuri to interrupt its charge or evade out of its path right before it makes contact to deal with this attack. |
Tail Attack Variations |
---|
Tail Spin: The Gritdog twists its body to one side before spinning its massive tail around, knocking nearby hunters away and dealing moderate damage. To deal with this attack, dodge past the Gritdog as it occurs or away from the tail spin's path to avoid getting hurt. |
Quick Tail Swipes: When hunters stick too close behind the Gritdog, it can lift its tail and quickly sweep it twice from one side to another, dealing moderate damage and knocking them backward. Stay alert for this attack whenever you deal continuous damage to its tail. |
Ironsand Attack Variations |
---|
Iron Spike Wave: The Gritdog slams one of its paws on the ground, sending a wave of ironsand spikes toward the hunter after a short delay. Take note of this attack's unique animation and dodge out of the ironsand spikes' path to avoid getting hit. |
Iron Spike Slam: The Gritdog stands on its hind legs before slamming its body downward and causing ironsand spikes to erupt in an area in front of it. Since this attack shares a similar windup animation with Pouncing Tackle, always prepare to dodge away from a close-range attack when the kemono starts standing tall. |
Iron Spike Ring: The Gritdog rubs its palms to gather ironsand before slamming down on the ground, causing a ring of iron spikes to erupt from the ground. Take note of this attack's unique windup and dodge out of the body slam and iron spikes' radius to avoid getting hit. |
Sprouting Spikes: The Gritdog pushes earth upward with its paws, causing ironsand spikes to erupt beneath the hunter after a short delay. Like Iron Spike Wave, take note of this attack's unique animation and dodge away from the ironsand indicators on the ground to avoid getting hurt. When the Gritdog performs this move while enraged, the ironsand spike radius increases, so you should prepare to cover more distance to avoid this attack. |
Tail Spike Barrage: The Gritdog gathers iron sand into its tail before sending a barrage of ferrous spikes toward the hunter. Keep an eye on the Gritdog's tail and dodge away from the path of each projectile to deal with this attack. |
Enraged Ironsand Attack Variations |
---|
Ironsand Blast: When the Gritdog becomes enraged, it lifts up mounds of ironsand around its body before pounding on its belly to release a forceful blast. Quickly evade backward or use a Spring Karakuri to reposition away from the kemono while it performs this attack. |
Ferrous Mine Explosion: While enraged, the Gritdog can conjure an ironsand mine and detonate it with a body slam to deal massive damage to every hunter nearby. To deal with this attack, use a Spring Karakuri or sprint and evade away from the ironsand explosive to avoid getting hurt. |
Magnetic Belly Drum: While enraged, the Gritdog can sit down and begin drumming on its belly to magnetize nearby hunters toward it, culminating in a final forceful ironsand blast that deals heavy damage. When this attack occurs, quickly sprint away from its radius or use Spring Karakuri to leave the magnetic field to avoid getting hit. |
Iron Bulwark Shockwave: While enraged, the Gritdog can conjure an ironsand Bulwark Karakuri and detonate it to send out erratic waves of iron spikes toward the hunter. To deal with this attack, dampen the damage by using an Elemental Lantern Karakuri and keep your distance away from the kemono to have an easier time avoiding the iron spikes. |
