Strategy
Since many of the fumebeak's attacks are toxic, the hunt will go much more smoothly if you're equipped with poison-resistant armor. You might also want to consider something like a repeater crossbow to fire continuously at the bird, because it can cause trouble by taking to the air frequently. Another useful trick is using a bulwark to deflect its spiraling dives, giving you a chance to counter.

How to Beat Fumebeak

Fumebeak Tips

Target Its Head

The softest part on a Fumebeak is its head. A great window to attack it is after it dives or slams into the ground as it tries to recover. With a medium body size, targeting its head can also damage other parts if you're using melee weapons.

Exploit Attack Intervals

After every attack, Fumebeak will have an idle moment giving you a window to land free hits without worrying about getting hit. We highly recommend using jump attacks from crates or the bulwark to maximize this damage opportunity.

Utilize the Bulwark and Firework Karakuri

Never hesitate to setup a bulwark karakuri as this blocks most of its attacks, especially fatal ones. The bulwark karakuri is a perfect counter for a Fumebeak's dive or sweep attacks and has a high chance of staggering them for a generous amount of time.

We also recommend using Firework Karakuri often during the fight to knock the Fumebeak down while it's flying. You can awaken the Firework Karakuri when fighting the Dreadclaw with the Torch Karakuri equipped.

Dodge or Slide Forward

When dodging an attack from the Fumebeak, we highly recommend dodging forward as this allows you to dodge the Fumebeak's follow-up attacks. Sliding also has a considerable invincibility frame, which is best used when the Fumebeak uses an attack that covers a wide area.

Wear Anti-Toxin or Poison Recovery Armor

Although you only gain access to anti-toxin armor after you've defeated your first Fumebeak, it's best to craft these for fights against tougher Fumebeak variants.

Fumebeak Attacks and Moves

Name Description
Wing Swipe A quick attack used by Fumebeak to send unsuspecting hunters away from its head and body.
Spinning Top A relentless attack that is nearly impossible to avoid.
Charging Attacks A Fumebeak's set of attacks that are extremely fatal for inexperienced hunters.
Toxin-based Attacks Fumebeak's signature attacks with its poison ailment that can prove deadly to unprepared hunters.
Enraged State Attacks A Fumebeak's enraged state comes with unique and more dangerous attack patterns that make the fight harder as it nears an end.

Wing Swipe

Wing Swipe Attack Information
Wing Swipe: Fumebeak uses its wing to swipe an area in front of it, knocking back any hunter unable to dodge. Avoid this attack by dodging forward.

Spinning Top

Spinning Top Attack Information
Spinning Top: Fumebeak will wind up in the air for a time then proceed to land while spinning its wings for a long duration. This attack follows a targeted hunter and is impossible to dodge.

To counter this attack, set a bulwark and hide behind it as the Fumebeak winds up in the air.

Charging Attacks

Charging Attack Variations
Running Body Slam: Fumebeak will charge at the targeted hunter's position and slam its body on the area. Avoid this by dodging forward or sideways.
Flying Sweep: From a flying state, the Fumebeak will do a backflip then sweep towards a targeted hunter. This attack ends with a body slam that damages a wider area.

You can avoid this attack by dodging forward, or counter it by setting a bulwark karakuri as the Fumebeak does its backflip.
Lunging Grab Attack: Fumebeak will cover its chest with its wings, then proceed to lunge at a targeted hunter. If the Fumebeak manages to grab a hunter, it will spit toxins two times then throw the hunter away.

Always avoid this attack by dodging sideways as dodging forward is a risky move against this attack. Keep in mind that bulwark karakuris do not block this attack.

Toxin-based Attacks

Toxin-based Attack Information
Toxin Throw: Fumebeak's attack similar to its Wing Swipe but throws toxins at a targeted hunter from a distance. Avoid this attack by dodging forward if you're in range of the Wing Swipe, and dodge sideways if you're targeted from a distance.
Toxin Spit: From a flying state, Fumebeak will spit a barrage of toxins at a targeted hunter's direction. You can avoid this by dodging forward and taking position directly under the Fumebeak, or counter this by setting a bulwark to block the toxins.
Charged Toxin Spit: From a flying state, Fumebeak will charge toxins then spit it on a targeted hunter. The toxin projectile travels faster and is fatal on direct hits.

You can avoid this by taking position under Fumebeak or counter it by setting a bulwark to block the projectile.

Enraged State Attacks

Attack Information
Toxic Grounds: As Fumebeak enters its enraged state, it will cover the ground it stands on with toxin. If you do not have Anti-toxin or Poison Recover armor it's best to stay out of the way as the toxin build-up is fast and recovery is slow.
Spiral Sweep: While airborne, Fumebeak will wind up its left wing then proceed to sweep at a targeted hunter's direction twice. This attack has a wider area of effect and is fatal on direct hits.

Avoid this attack by sliding sideways, or counter it by setting a bulwark karakuri.
