Mario Strikers Formation Positions Explained

There are three main positions in Mario Strikers: Battle League: Captains, Playmakers, and Defenders. They have different roles and are placed in specific formations on the field. Read on to learn more about each position and what they are used for.

Team Positions and Roles

Captains (First Slot)

Team Slot Field Position

The captain is assigned to the first team slot in a match. It is the captain's role to be the primary scorer and shooter of the team. They will be your main offensive threat and are also often the first character in contact with the ball.

Best Characters for the Captain Position

It is recommended to place characters that have high Shooting or Technique in this slot since they can effectively score goals and execute Hyper Strikes.

Rosalina IconRosalina Rosalina's has high Strength, Shooting, and Technique stats make her a great scorer. Use her to make Perfect Shots easily from a distance.
Bowser IconBowser Bowser's high Strength and Shooting allow him to tackle opponents on Defense and transition for a quick goal. Beware however, as his size makes him succeptible to being tackled as well.
Wario IconWario Similar to Bowser, Wario's high Strength and Shooting can make for easy stops on Defense and a quick goal.
Mario IconMario Mario's balanced stats makes him a fine choice as Captain since he can easily juke opponents with his high Technique.
Peach IconPeach Peach's high Speed and Technique make for a dangerous Captain since she can lose opponents by skillfully dribbling pass them.

Playmakers (Second and Third Slots)

Team Slot Field Position

Passers and Playmakers are assigned to the second and third team slots. They are very versatile, often involved in both defensive and offensive plays, and are usually the ones passing the ball to the captain so they can make the shot.

They will position themselves on the left and right wings of the field at the start of a play.

Best Characters for the Playmaker Position

It is recommended to place characters that have high Speed or Passing in this slot, so they can easily adapt to different playstyles and can pass to other teammates when needed.

Toad IconToad Toad's high Speed and Passing make him a fantastic playmaker. You can have 2 or more Toads in a team, using their high Speed for getting items and Hyper Strike Orbs. However, Toad's low Strength makes him extremely vulnerable to tackles.
Yoshi IconYoshi Yoshi's high Shooting and Passing stats make him an offensive threat. Defending against Yoshi is difficult as he can score goals near the line of scrimmage.
Donkey Kong IconDonkey Kong Donkey Kong's high Strength and Passing make him a useful on both offense and defense. He can easily tackle an opponent for the possession and find a teammate for a quick goal.
Luigi IconLuigi Luigi's high Passing and Technique allow him to carry the ball upfield.
Bowser IconBowser Bowser's Strength, Shooting, and size make him a great midfielder, as he can tackle opponents to steal the ball and then score from a distance.
Wario IconWario Wario can be played the ame way as Bowser, effectively applying both defensive and offensive pressure midfield.

Defenders (Fourth Slot)

Team Slot Field Position

The defender is assigned to the final team slot. The Defender's role is to defend your side of the field from any oncoming opponents. They also act as the goal's first line of defense before the goalie.

Defenders are placed at the back of the field, closer to the goal, at the start of the play.

Best Character for the Defender Position

It is recommended to place characters that have high Strength in the Defender Slot, so they can more effectively tackle opponents and steal the ball.

Waluigi IconWaluigi Waluigi's high Strength and Speed allow him to cover any opponent trying to score a goal.
Donkey Kong IconDonkey Kong Donkey Kong's high Strength and Passing allow for a quick transition offense after a defensive stop.
Bowser IconBowser Thanks to Bowser's high Strength and Shooting, he can make plays on the defense by tackling opponents and score a goal from long distances.
