You can aim the ball by charging up to shoot and choosing the ball's direction using the Left Control Stick. The ball will automatically be shot in that direction once you let go of the shoot button. It also makes the ball curve, making it harder for the goalie to get a hold of it!
Note that the ball's direction will be more accurate depending on how high the character's Technique stat is.

Characters with high Technique benefit more when curving a shot, as they will have better accuracy and can place the ball on more hard-to-defend spots. You can even equip them with Gear that adds Technique to increase it further!
Doing an aimed shot takes time, and you might get tackled before you can even kick the ball. You can cancel it if needed by pressing the B to pass the ball or the R button to dodge. You might also get to a better position and score by doing so!
You can learn and practice Aimed Shots in Training Mode under the Moving & Shooting lesson. Training Mode is a set of tutorial levels for Mario Strikers: Battle League where players can learn and practice the basics of the game.
