Damage Calculation Explained

Calculated Based on Attack and Defense Stats and Modifiers

Damage that you deal with physical or magical attacks is a complex system that factors the number of attacks, the attacker's stats, and the target's defensive stats.

There are also many modifiers that affect damage that you can get from various armor or weapons so take an advantage of these modifiers to gain the upper hand in battle.

Modifiers that Affect Damage

Critical Modifier Hitting a critical doubles your damage.
Weakness Hitting an enemy's with their weakness will be 1.5 times more effective.
Species Type If you hit a species with a weapon, ability, or special move that is effective against them, damage will be multipled by 1.5 or 1.75.
Number of Enemies When you try to hit multiple targets, damage or recovery decreases. Less targets will mean more damage or more recovery and vice versa.
Default Default reduces damage taken.
Random Modification A stat that affect formulas. Varies from 0.8 to 1.2x or 0.9 to 1.1x

Physical Formula Explained

Physical Attack Damage Formula

(Physical Attack + Skill Power - Target's Physical Defense) ÷ 2

Physical Attack Damage is calculated based on a character's physical attack, the strength of the skill, and the target's physical defense.

Modifiers that Affect Physical Damage

Special Move Power Each special move has its own unique power. Does not apply to normal attacks.
Number of attacks The number of hits is determined by job level and speed. The more hits you get, the more damage you receive and vice versa.
Power Multiplier Ability and special move damage multiplier. Normal attack is 1.0x
Critical Modifier Normal attack damage get doubled.
Weakness Hitting an enemy's with their weakness will do 1.5 times more damage.
Species Type If you hit a species with a weapon, ability, or special move that is effective against them, damage will be multipled by 1.5 or 1.75.
Number of Enemies 0.6x damage when targetting 2 enemies. 0.5x damage for 3-4 enemies and 0.4x damage for 5 enemies and more.

Magic Formula Explained

Magical Attack Damage Formula

(Spell Power + Attacker's Magic Attack Power - Target's Magic Defense) ÷ 2

Magic damage is comprised by the attacker's magic attack power and magic defense of the target. These are influenced by Mind, Intelligence, and Job Level. Magic always hits except for some.

Modifiers that Affect Magical Damage

Spell Power Base Power of Spell
Power Multiplier Ability and special move damage multiplier. Normal attack is 1.0x
Critical Modifier Magic attack damage gets doubled.
Weakness Hitting an enemy's with their weakness will do 1.5 times more damage.
Job Level Modifier The higher the job level, the higher the damage
Number of Enemies 0.6x damage when targetting 2 enemies. 0.5x damage for 3-4 enemies and 0.4x damage for 5 enemies and more.
Default Damage taken is reduced to 0.5x when Defaulting.
Random Modification Randomly changes between 0.8 and 1.2 times

Hit Rate and Evasion Rate Formula Explained

Hit and Evasion Formula

Attacker's Hit Rate = (Base Hit Rate + Attacker's Dexterity) ÷ 5 × Blind Modifier
Target's Evasion Rate = (Base Evasion Rate + Target's Agility ÷ 20) × Status Ailment Correction

Physical attacks and some magic spells will have a hit and evasion formula. If the target is Blinded or Asleep, the evasion rate is 0% which means attacks are guaranteed to hit.

Modifiers that Affect Hit and Evasion

Basic Hit Rate The total hit chance for each equipped weapon.
Blindness If the character is blinded, the accuracy will drop.
Basic Evasion Rate The combined evasion rate of the armor.
Status Ailment Correction If the target is Blinded, Paralyzed, Asleep, or Stopped, attacks will always hit.

Recovery Formula Explained

Recovery Formula

(Spell Power + Job Level) x (Mind ÷ 3)

The amount of health recovered from White Magic spells such as Cure, Cura, and Curaga are affected by the spell power, Job Level and Mind. If the recovery spell is applied to the whole party, its effectiveness will decrease depending on the number of affected.

The amount recovered is also affected by a random stat.

Modifiers that Affect Recovery

Spell Power Base power of the recovery spell
Number of Targets 0.6x damage when targetting 2 enemies. 0.5x damage for 3-4 enemies and 0.4x damage for 5 enemies and more.
This is when using recovery against Undead.
Random Modification Final recovery amount ranges from 0.9 to 1.1x

Status Ailment Formula Explained

Status Ailment Formula

Status Ailment Additional Value + Attacker's Intelligence - Target's Mind - Target's Status Ailment Resistance Value

The success rate of affecting someone with status ailment largely depends on Status Ailement Additional Value and Status Ailment Resistance Value. The success rate is also affected by the attacker's Intelligence stat and the target's Mind stat.

Agility x Random Correction

The order of actions during battle is determined by the speed of each character. Action speed is a system that randomly modifies speed based on agility, so there is no fixed value. Note that action speed does not increase number of hits.
