How to Unlock There Can Be Only One
This quest can be unlocked by picking the notice on the Notice Board in The Gran'place.

This quest can not be failed.
There Can Be Only One Walkthrough
| Objectives | |
|---|---|
| 1 | Go to Lac Célavy, and swim to the island in the middle. |
| 2 | In the middle of the isle is a small pond, go there and talk to the hermit in the middle of the pond. |
| 3 | Read the inscription on the 5 stones to the north of the hermit. Reading them will give you 50 XP. |
| 4 | To continue you will have to prove your valor, compassion, generosity, honor, and wisdom. Proving the 5 virtues will require certain choices or tasks to be completed. Read the How to Prove the Five Virtues in There Can Be Only One section for more information. |
| 5 | Go back to the hermit and talk to him. |
| 6 | Fight the hermit. |
How to Prove the Five Virtues in There Can Be Only One
You can prove you possess the five virtues by completing certain objectives throughout different quests in Toussaint.
Proving Compassion
- The Beast of Toussaint - After the fight in the arena against the Shaelmar, choose to spare it.
- The Hunger Game - Choose to let Marlene stay in Corvo Blanco after turning her human in the quest La Cage au Fou.
- Capture the Castle - Help Roderick after beating him and his men and receiving information on Syanna
- Goodness, Gracious, Great Balls of Granite! - When confronting the old man who stole the stones, let him keep it.
- Big Game Hunter - Do the optional objective to free the panther and then at the end of the quest, join Beladel at the exhibit and ask him about his daughter.
- Mutual of Beauclair's Wild Kingdom - Choose to let the basilisk live
- Equine Phantoms - When confronting the Umbra, get Roach to forgive the spirit.
- Contract: The Tufo Monster - After getting the pendant near Jean-Luc's corpse, give it to Andrée, Jean-Christophe's wife.
Proving Valor
- Night of the Long Fangs - Help Delwyn of Creigiau defeat the Katakan.
- Tesham Mutna - Kill Detlaff.
- The Warble of a Smitten Knight - Choose to continue the tourney and win it.
- Feet as Cold as Ice - Help François kill the Grottore and make sure he lives through the fight.
- Raging Wolf - Defeat the champion Maestro at a fistfight.
- Contract: Bovine Blues - Complete the contract by slaying the slyzard couple.
- Equine Phantoms - Choose not to forgive the Umbra and instead try to kill it.
- Mutual of Beauclair's Wild Kingdom - Choose to kill the endangered Basilisk.
- Contract: The Tufo Monster - Kill the Shealmar known as the Monster of Tufo.
- Portrait of a Witcher as an Old Man - Kill the griffin that attacks you and the painter.
Proving Generosity
- Face and Turn the Strange - After completing the quest Blood Run, you will encounter a delivery boy when entering the town. Tip him 5 crowns.
- Where Children Toil, Toys Waste Away - When asking the shoeshine about Detlaff, agree to pay him. Negotiating to drive the price down will still count.
- Beyond Hill and Dale - Get Syanna's Ribbon from the Little Flint Girl, either by buying it or winning it from her in a game of Gwent.
- Mutual of Beauclair's Wild Kingdom - After choosing to let the basilisk free, do not accept the extra payment.
- A Portrait of the Witcher as an Old Man - At the end of the quest, agree to buy the painting of Geralt for 1000 crowns from the painter.
- Equine Phantoms - At the beginning of the quest, when talking to Pinastri the hermit, try to barter. After discovering all she has are potatoes, decline the payment.
Proving Honor
- The Warble of a Smitten Knight - When entering the tourney, enter it as Geralt of Rivia. Anséis the prince of Lyria and Rivia will challenge Geralt to a duel. You will still prove honorable even if you try to decline or lose the duel.
- Till Death Do You Part - After completing the quest, return to Charles Lanzano and be truthful about the cause of the problem. Telling him there were no monsters.
- The Warble of a Smitten Knight - Do not tell Guillaume about Vivienne's curse.
- Goodness, Gracious, Great Balls of Granite! - Bring back the stones to the curator. Whether you lent it to the old man or get it right away does not matter.
- Father Knows Worst - Agree to Hugo's request to find the condenser and give it to him. (Note: Can only be done if you did not find the condenser before talking to Hugo)
Proving Wisdom
- The Beast of Toussaint - While looking for Milton, get the right answer to the riddle.
- La Cage au Fou - Instead of killing the Spotted Wight, lift its curse.
- A Knight's Tales - Find and use Sir Gareth's bones to lift the curse. You can do it on your own or with the help of the witch, as long as you use the bone to lift the curse, you will prove your wisdom.
- Father Knows Worst - When leaving the cave with Hugo, choose not to attack the other brothers.
- But Other Than That, How DId you Enjoy the Play - On your first try, light the candles in the right order. You can tell the order by examing the footprints and backtracking them.
- Gwent: To Everything - Turn, Turn, Tournament! - Win the tournament
Fastest Way to Get Aerondight
The fasted way to get Aerondight is by completing these quests, The Beast of Toussaint, Blood Run and The Warble of a Smitten Knight.
Compassion
In The Beast of Toussaint, choose to spare the Shaelmar after beating it to prove your compassion.
Wisdom
At the end of The Beast of Toussaint, while trying to find out Milton's location, get the right answer to the riddle to prove your wisdom. The answer to the riddle is [Greenhouse].
Generosity
After fighting with Detlaff in Blood Run, you will encounter a delivery boy in town. Tip him 5 crowns after he gives you the letter to prove your generosity.
Honor
At the beginning of the quest The Warble of a Smitten Knight, choose to enter the tournament as Geralt of Rivia
. You will then prove your honor after the duel against Prince Anséis. You do not have to win the duel to prove your honor. If you did not enter the tournament as Geralt, you can still prove your honor by keeping Vivienne's secret from Guillaume.
Valor
Near the end of The Warble of a Smitten Knight, choose to continue the tournament and win it. The only way to challenge the champion and win the tournament is by winning every other challenge in the tournament.

Fighting the Hermit
Attacks
| Staff Attack | The hermits swings his staff around to hit Geralt. |
|---|---|
| Water Tornado | Covers himself in a water tornado that will do damage when close. |
| Teleport | Will dissapear in a column of water. Will attack when reappearing near you. |
| Water Blast | Will blast water from under you. Location of attack telegraphed by splashes. |
| Water Ray | Blast a ray of water at Geralt |
| Aard | Knocks Geralt back. Uses it after Geralt does damage to the hermit at close range. |
Tactic
Dodge, his ranged attacks and try to get in close. Use Axii or Aard to stun him and get a 1-2 light attacks or 1 heavy attack in. Get back right away and repeat. When he uses the tornado attack, use Aard to get rid of the tornado.

This Quest is Worth It
Completing this quest will reward you with Aerondight, one of the strongest silver swords in the game.
