To change party members, simply head to the in-game menu and open Team Setup. You can access this by pressing the indicated buttons displayed at the bottom of the screen.
Keep in mind that you can only change party members outside of settlements. Accessing teams and changing party members within towns and villages won’t allow you to make these changes.
Once you have the Team Setup screen open, select the character you want to replace or add to your team in any of the Team Member slots.
You can only choose two team members to accompany you during explorations and combat. Characters not assigned to any team member slots will not appear in the overworld and won’t provide any combat aid during team fights.
You can also change the player character you control in the same menu. To do this, follow the same steps above and replace the character in the Player slot instead.
As the story progresses, you will encounter various enemies and bosses with different gimmicks or playstyles, making it necessary to change party members depending on your strategy. It's also a good practice to save the game before every boss battle, especially if you're playing on normal or hard difficulty, to make the fights easier.
On higher difficulties, consider changing your party members to include support units. With harder battles, support units are crucial to the team. Careena, for example, is an excellent choice for early gameplay. She comes with both supportive and offensive capabilities, such as providing buffs and dealing area-of-effect attacks during combat.
For late-game, you can replace Careena with Julei. He is the best support character among all the playable characters, providing healing and regenerative effects to the team when added.
