While climbing hills doesn't offer a reward, they do have chests on top of them containing valuable loot such as crafting materials, as well as ore veins that you can mine for ores.

Buy Treasure Maps to Check for Unlooted Hills

Owning a Treasure Map for a region helps you determine which hill still have unlooted chests. You can buy treasure maps at a Trading Post in exchange for an Ancient Gold Coin.

Unfortunately, the treasure map doesn't show if a hill has ore veins. A workaround for this is to check whether an unexplored hill (indicated by a gray icon on the map) doesn't have treasure chest icons, which means that it has ore veins at the very top.

What are Hills?

Climable Structures with Loot

Hills are marked on the map as a point of interest, since it contains valuable loot from either treasure chests or ore veins at the very top.

Most hills are guarded by enemies, so it's better to take them out first before climbing to avoid taking damage and to loot the hill peacefully.
