You can unlock this contract quest by reading the notice board in Border Post or Oxenfurt.
This quest is not failable.
| Objectives | |
|---|---|
| 1 | Talk to the captian of the guard, marked in Border Post. |
| 2 | Head to the marked area. You will encounter 2 Alghouls. |
| 3 | Examine the area around the cart with your Witcher Senses. Inpsect the footprints found south west of the cart. |
| 4 | Follow the tracks using your Witcher Senses. There will be 6 Drowners along the trail you will have to kill . |
| 5 | Continue following the footprints to the top of the hill. You can choose to ask to see the commander. Every other choice will have you fight the elves. If you end up killing the elves you will need to loot the body of the commander to get a squirrel tail as proof. |
| 6 | If you agree to see the commander, you will be asked to give up your weapons. Deny to give them your weapons and you will have to fight them. |
| 7 | While talking to the commander you can choose to leave them be or start a fight with them. If you choose to leave them be they will give you Silk, Wolf hide x 6, Allspice x 2, and Tracker's trousers |
| 8 | Whether or not you killed the Scoia'tael you will have to go back to the captain. |
| 9 | If you killed the Scoia'tael you will give the squirrel tail as proof. If you did not kill them you will have a choice between telling the captain about them or keeping them a secret. Whatever you chose you will still receive 25 XP. |
As Geralt is handling a contract for a monster in the area, he discovers that the monster is, in reality, a Scoia'tael band. They have been attacking Redanian soldiers for supplies since the Redanias have also been torturing and killing the Scoia'tael.
Killing the Scoia'tael will get you 30 Crowns and Letter of Safe Conduct.
If you tell the captain about the Scoia'tael but did not kill them, he will only give you the Letter of Safe Conduct. After the contract ends, there will be a chance of the Scoia'tael ambushing you, calling you a traitor.
If you do not reveal the existence of the Scoia'tael to the captain, he will not reward you.
If you would want the most rewards out of this quest, the best choice would be meeting the commander and telling them you will leave them be, but kill them after.
If the player would rather base their decision on the story, leaving them alone would be for the best. You will still have the items the Scoia'tael gave you. The 30 Crowns are not much and the Letter of Safe Conduct can be obtained through other means.

Killing the elves gives more rewards. 30 gold + the pass and the various swords and other loot they drop in addition to the loot found at the bandit camp if you follow along the ridge to the right of where you engaged the elves exceeds the other choices.
