FF X uses the Sphere Grid in leveling up characters. Each node represents a stat or ability which the player can activate to gain the corresponding stat/ability.
On the menu screen, choose Sphere Grid. You will then be brought to the Sphere Grid Menu. The White indicator is the current position of your current character in the grid. Pressing the X button will give you two choices. Move and Use.

Moving in the Sphere Grid will make the character's position in the grid change position. The character however, can only move to adjacent nodes connected by a path. Moving will also consume a Sphere Level.
Use will allow the player to use Spheres in the Sphere Grid. The Sphere Grid is divided into 6 types of nodes. These are:
The nodes the player can activate are Nodes in the character's current position and adjacent nodes.
There are also special Spheres the player can use as they go through the game. These spheres range from creating new nodes to changing the position of the character in the grid.

The player can also view the character's stats in the game by pressing the Triangle button in the Sphere Grid menu. This will show the character's current stats. Pressing the Triangle button again will show the other abilities the character has known.

You can change the current character you are using in the Sphere Grid with the L1 and R1 buttons. This can also be done while displaying the status of the character for stat comparison.
