FF X uses the Sphere Grid in levelling up characters. Each node represents a stat or ability which the player can activate to gain the corresponding stat/ability.

How to use the Sphere Grid

On the menu screen, choose Sphere Grid. You will then be brought to the Sphere Grid Menu. The White indicator is the current position of your current character in the grid. Pressing the X button will give you two choices. Move and Use.

Sphere Grid Move

Moving in the Sphere Grid will make the characters position in the grid change position. The character however, can only move to adjacent nodes connected by a path. Moving will also consume a Sphere Level.

Sphere Grid Use

Use will allow the player to use Spheres in the Sphere Grid. The Sphere Grid is divided in 6 types of nodes. These are:

  • Power Nodes
  • Speed Nodes
  • Magic Nodes
  • Luck Nodes
  • Ability Nodes
  • Lock Nodes

The nodes the player can activate are Nodes in the characters current position and adjacent nodes.

Sphere Grid Advanced Use

There are also special Spheres the player can use as they go through the game. These spheres range from creating new nodes to changing the position of the character in the grid.

Display Status

The player can also view the character's stats in the game by pressing the Triangle button in the Sphere Grid menu. This will show the characters current stats. Pressing the Triangle button again will show the other abilities the character has known.

Shifting characters

You can change the current character you are using in the Sphere Grid with the L1 and R1 buttons. This can also be done while displaying the status of the character for stat comparison.

Standard or Expert Sphere Grid?

Standard Sphere Grid

The Standard Sphere Grid puts every character in their own path in the Sphere Grid. This allows the player to just level the character easily without planning. Highly Recommended for players new to the game

Expert Sphere Grid

The Expert Sphere Grid puts all characters in the center of the Sphere Grid. This allows the player to customize the way the characters would level up in the game. The Expert Sphere Grid however, has fewer nodes to fill than the Standard Sphere Grid making your characters weaker at the end of the game. Highly Recommended for players that have experience with the game.
