Team Building Guide

Building a strong team in Black Beacon requires more than just getting good characters. You’ll need to consider who enters battle first, account for skill cooldowns, and factor in elemental anomalies. This guide covers everything you need to know to build an effective team.

Team Building Guide

Pick the Team's Main Carry and Two Good Supports

Florence

With resources being scarce in Black Beacon's early game, you can realstically invest in only one or two characters (some resources can be put toward a third, but not much).

So when designing your team, decide on which character your team will be leaning on the most. This will most likely be a DPS like Florence or Ereshan, who you would then build the team around and invest most of your resources into upgrading. The most damage they can deal and the easier their skill rotations can be done, the better.

Team Florence

What support characters complement your main carry's abilities the best? Zero is one of the game's best units as of this writing because of how her ATK buffs make her compatible with many team setups.

Meanwhile, other units like Enki, or Asti can perform tertiary support functions (Asti can keep your main carry healed up, Enki can set up energy ball traps), while others like Ninsar and Logos can do that while also being able to act as secondary DPS characters.

Test Out Your Team's Character Rotation

Once you got a few characters together, it's time to test out the character rotation. This is where you figure out whether or not your team actually works.

If your team's main carry is a DPS that deals good burst damage, then you will want your rotation to be fast enough that once you switch to your main carry, they still have all the buffs from their two other team members.

If your DPS is supposed to stay long in the field (or a hypercarry), then you will want your two other characters to give them passive abilities since you will barely switch them with anyone else at all.

For the purposes of our guide, we will talk about teams that require you to switch often between your characters. Teams with burst-type DPS units (or even more general DPS units that are supposed to stay longer on the field) often need additional buffs to protect themselves or deal further damage before they do their skills.

So, in a team consisting of Zero, Ming, and Florence, you will want to designate Zero as the First Strike (or first character on the field), then pull off her Attack buff before quickly switching to Ming and getting her second skill off for the cloak of fire she wraps herself with.

Since that buff lasts for only 10 or so seconds (and Zero's buff lasts around 20 seconds), there should be enough time for Florence to benefit from both of their buffs and pull off her own rotation before the buffs end.

If one of the parts of your team's character rotation does not work (a buff runs out just before you switch to your DPS, your DPS's skill rotation takes too long to finish, one of your characters' rotations are too complicated to do, etc.) or does not complement your main carry's own skills (doesn't deal extra elemental support, gives a buff your DPS does not really need, etc.), consider revising your team.

Make Your Character Rotation Covers Skill Cooldown Times

An important factor in deciding your team composition is whether their skill cooldowns (or at least the skill cooldown of the most pivotal character) overlap with their rotations.

For example, with Florence, her skills take up to 30 seconds to cool down once she has done her burst. Within those 30 seconds, the other two characters will have to be able to do their own rotations before switching back to her. That way, no time (or potential damage) is wasted.

Going back to the Zero/Ming/Florence team from earlier, both Zero and Ming can pull off their rotations within 30 seconds (after at least a few Breakthrough Level upgrades in Zero's case). So when you switch back to Florence, her skills are ready to go or are just about to finish cooling down.

Make Sure to Have At Least Two Elements in Your Team

Elements

There are five elements in Black Beacon: Fire, Water, Thunder, Light, and Dark. All characters fall under one of these elements, which determines what kind of Elemental Anomalies they deal to enemies.

Elemental Anomalies are status effects that often deal extra damage to enemies or harm them in another way such as freezing them in place (the Stasis Elemental Anomaly for Water element characters).

List of All Elemental Anomalies

But if you manage to inflict one elemental anomaly on top of another elemental anomaly while the first one is still active, your character gets to inflict an Elemental Overload on the enemy, which deals massive explosive damage.

For example, our Zero/Ming/Florence team has two elements: Light and Dark. If Zero manages to trigger Glaring, Ming and Florence can quickly inflict the enemy with Burning before the Glaring anomaly expires, which inflicts Elemental Overload and damages the enemy even further.

It's viable to run mono-element teams in Black Beacon, which allow you to inflict elemental anomalies far more quickly (since evey member of the team deals the same element damage). However, bear in mind that you will be missing out on elemental overload.

Also, different elements have different kinds of Destruction, Assist, and Breaker characters that work well with characters from other elements, so don't hesitate to mix characters of different elements in one party.

Make Best Use of Whatever Characters You Have

Unless you have the resources, there is no guarantee that you will get the absolute best characters when you start your playthrough of Black Beacon. But as long as you have a main carry and at least one other support (you will always get Zero at the start of the game, who is one of the best support units as of writing), you will do fine.

Always remember that the shorter a character's rotation and the simpler it is pull off, the better. Make sure that your characters's skills compelement the main carry at least somewhat, and their rotations cover the skill cooldowns of the most important character in the party.

This team can you your default team from the start, as you can get Shamash, Zero, and Asti without having to expend any resources whatsoever. They also happen to be a decent team at least for the early game.

Zero activates her Attack buff before switching to Shamash, who's supposed to get his Rage mechanic going and go into his burst mode. If his health is low, you can switch from Zero to Asti instead, who can give Shamash passive healing until he's good to go again.

Eventually, you will want to replace Shamash for a far stronger DPS. Asti's replacement will depend on which DPS you choose; they should ideally be a unit that's the same element as the DPS and will be able to support them both with skills and by helping them inflict Elemental Anomalies.
