Leveling up your characters in Black Beacon helps them perform better in combat. Learn more about how to raise your character's level, as well as raising their level cap in our guide.
List of Contents

Leveling up characters is the primary way to progress through Black Beacon's story and other game modes. With each level up, your character gets higher stats and new Talents that make them better at their role. This allows them to take on increasingly difficult quests and eventually get to end-game modes such as Infinite Multiverse and Tome of Fate.
There are three separate levels you will need to raise so your character becomes more powerful: Character Level, Breakthrough Level, and the levels of their individual skills or Skill Level.

You will need to get multiple copies of the same character to unlock Potentials, which are upgrades that make them better at their role (similar to Talents). For example, Logos only unlocks her ability to revive a fallen ally if her Potential Level has been raised to 6 - which is only unlocked by getting six more copies of her.
To get more copies of a character, there are at least two ways: Getting their copies from one of the game's Retrieval Pools, or buying copies from the Store.

You will need EXP upgrade materials and Orelium to increase your character's level. These can be obtained through certain Story and Side Story missions, various game modes, and in-game rewards. Here are the steps to upgrade your character's level:
| 1 | ![]() Select "Character" from the home screen menu, which can be found in the bottom-right part of the home screen. |
|---|---|
| 2 | ![]() From here, select a character to level up and choose "Develop." |
| 3 | ![]() In this menu, "Stats" is the default option, and you can press "Upgrade" to enhance the character's stats. |

Unlocking Breakthrough levels allows you to increase the maximum level of your characters. For instance, having zero Breakthrough levels caps your character's level at 20. However, achieving Breakthrough level 1 increases your character's max level cap to 40. The current maximum level is 90.
To do this, simply max out your character's current level cap. This will change the "Upgrade" option to "Breakthrough," which increases stats and raises the maximum level threshold of your character. You will also need Breakthrough items like Moonlit Red Stone and the appropriate elemental materials to increase a character's Breakthrough level.

Upgrading Skills is important for increasing your characters' skill damage or overall effectiveness. For instance, upgrading Asti's passive skill, VIP List, increases the amount of HP your team receives once it’s active.
You can upgrade character skills by tapping "Skill" under the Develop section and selecting which skill to upgrade. There are six skills to enhance: Skill 1, Skill 2, Basic Attack, Combo Skill, Ultimate Skill, and Passive Skill.

Characters also require different skill upgrade materials. For example, Florence and Asti need Sketching Under the Blossoms and its rarer versions, while Hephae and Shamash require Engraved Stone of the Law and its variants.
Keep in mind that Breakthrough levels are tied to skill levels. For example, you cannot upgrade skills until you reach Breakthrough Level 1, while Breakthrough Level 2 is required to upgrade skills beyond Level 3, and so on.

Resource quests are a set of missions that provide you with upgrade materials as rewards. Press the "Start Battle" option on the home screen and select "Resources." Here, you can find three quest categories: Stats, Breakthrough, and Skills. The first two offer upgrade materials for leveling up your characters.
In the Stats section, you need to complete "Library Reconstruction" quests to earn EXP materials. There are four repeatable quests, each increasing in difficulty, which you can unlock depending on your Seer Level.

Meanwhile, the Breakthrough section has three quests, two of which are required for increasing your character's Breakthrough level. The "Moonlit Secret Realm" and "Elemental Analysis" missions reward you with Breakthrough items. Make sure to change the elemental reward from the Elemental Analysis missions according to your character's Breakthrough requirements.
How to Get Upgrade Materials (Develop Items)

You can also buy EXP materials from the Lost-Time Store at the Retrieval Redemption Store, with a monthly limit of 30 pieces. The currency needed to purchase items in this store is called Lost Time Seals. You can earn this item when trying to pull a character or weapon from the Retrieval option in the home screen menu.

Playing certain story missions, including "Side Story" ones, also rewards you with EXP materials and other items. However, these rewards can only be acquired after completing a chapter mission for the first time. Additionally, some quests from EX mode reward you with EXP materials as well. Lastly, some side quests in the Event section, such as the "7-Day Quest," also offer materials for increasing character levels.

The most common way to get character copies. Depending on your character's rarity, it can be easy or relatively hard to get a copy. Standard 4-star and 5-star characters are usually available in the game's permanent banners such as Mortal Wanderings, which you can pull from using Keys of Lost Time (gray keys). Meanwhile, limited 5-star characters are pulled from their own specific retrieval pools, which are only around for a limited time and need Time-Seeking Keys (gold keys) to pull from.
Limited retrieval pools usually have increased drop rates for the character they're featuring along with three other characters, so there are higher chances of getting them. If the character you're trying to upgrade isn't one of the featured characters, they will only have average drop rates. Prepare to spend Rune Shards to get more pulls from these banners.

Depending on the rules of the individual retrieval pool, you can get a special currency called Imprint of Seeking Time. If you accumulate 200 of these, you can buy a copy of a character you already have from the Time-Seeking Shop.
Remember that you can only buy a copy of a character from this store once. Afterward, you will have to get more copies of your character through other means.
