Pressing L1 will open up a window where you can equip any of the five Signs on your R2 button (ZR Button on switch). Each Sign has its own unique effect that can help you fight enemies in combat and interact with objects in exploration.

Yrden Sign A stationary magic trap that can slow enemy movement |

Quen Sign Casts a protective shield to prevent taking damage |

Igni Sign Deals fire damage and a chance to apply burning |
|
Axii Sign Influences opponents' mind |
|
Aard Sign Telekinetic blast that knocks down enemies |
Each Sign can be upgraded with skill points and have an additional effect which can be used in combat to make fights easier or in quests to change the outcome of the story.
Some of the Signs you cast can also help you in other situations like lighting up torches or braziers using your Igni or using your Aard to break down collapsable walls. You can even use your Axii in various situations during dialogues, if you have Delusion.
