MultiVersus is a platform fighting game with online compatibility. Read on to learn about what netcode it uses and further details about its netcode.
Yes, it has been confirmed in a recent news announcement in the MultiVersus Developer Series: Netcode that MultiVersus features dedicated server-based rollback netcode that supports online gameplay.
During the open beta, the game used a different netcode that would consistently sync the animations on your machine. This meant that when you pressed a button, the animation would play, but the result of the move was ultimately decided by the server. This made your inputs inaccurate depending on how far you were from the server.
However, they rebuilt the game from the ground up and now use rollback netcode, which makes every button press accompanied by a precise timestamp, marking the exact moment of activation. If the game predicts your character will walk forward, for example, that is what the game will show your opponent. However, if you did not walk forward and jumped instead, the game will roll back and adjust to what actually happened based on the players’ real controller inputs. This allows the game to provide more accurate inputs while giving players a smoother and more enjoyable experience.
