Warhammer 40K: Space Marine 2

What is Cleaving Potential and Meaning

Space Marine 2 - Cleaving Potential

Cleaving Potential determines how well a weapon can strike multiple enemies in a single attack in Warhammer 40K: Space Marine 2. Learn what Cleaving Potential means, the best weapons for Cleaving Potential, and if it matters among weapon stats.

Cleaving Potential Meaning

Effectiveness in Hitting Multiple Enemies

Light attack swing with a Relic Fencing Thunder Hammer having Cleaving Potential 4.

Cleaving Potential is the effectiveness of weapon's melee attack hitting multiple enemies. A higher Cleaving Potential stat means being able to hit more enemies around or in front of you (varies weapon per moveset).

Also Pay Attention to Weapon Movesets and Speed

It is to be noted that while most weapon types can have similar Cleaving Potential values (like the Thunder Hammer sharing the 4-7 range values of a Power Sword), their actual horde control effectiveness should be observed in their movesets and Speed.

For example, Thunder Hammers are capable of hitting enemies around it (even from the back at an angle) in each light attack swing, and has the AoE moves Ground Pound (light + heavy attack combo) and Aftershock (charged heavy attack). This isn't that much present in the Power Sword, which relies on using Power Style for hitting enemies in a wider range.

Weapons with the Best Cleaving Potential

High Cleaving Potential Weapons
Space Marine 2 - AggamedesPower Fist
(Aggamedes's Gift - Gamma)
Cleaving Potential: 7
Space Marine 2 - Warden Blade - AlphaPower Sword
(Warden Blade - Alpha)
Cleaving Potential: 7
Space Marine 2 - Ophelian Liberation - GammaThunder Hammer
(Ophelian Liberation - Gamma)
Cleaving Potential: 6

Above are the weapons with highest Cleaving Potential values. Note that all of these are weapons with the Blocking Defence stat. Blocking weapons tend to be harder to use due to the lack of a Perfect Parry window, forcing you to use blocks and rely on dodges as your only form of fast retaliation.

If you have mastered dodging, you can use them effectively, especially in the Assault class where dodges are supported by class perks.

Does Cleaving Potential Matter?

Two light attacks of the Relic Blocking Power Fist having Cleaving Potential 7.

In Operations, Cleaving Potential can matter for dealing with swarms, but you will want to focus on other stats, especially Defence properties like Fencing when dealing with Majoris enemies or tougher, especially where enemies become spongier at higher threat levels such as Ruthless.

For Eternal War, high Cleaving Potential weapons become highly effective for melee-focused classes who can take down grouped enemies, especially in zone or defense-related modes.
