I had the same thing happen. I had an update, and it fixed the issue. also had the issue when playing too long and restarting the game.
You have to use the skill to search for weakness. Not manually search for weakness. On controller its the skill bound to X button.
You do need to find the pink "sweet spot" to do more damage and get more mats, but this doesn't seem to apply to the sweet spot search quest. I've easily completed it, but it's still showing 0/20. weird
I think as a woodcutter, you have to find the weak point of the tree that shows a pink damage bubble to make sure you get the most materials out of it.
