Slow but Heavy Hitting Greatsword

Mercenary
What differentiates the Mercenary from a Paladin is that it uses slow and heavy hitting greatsword attacks, making it stronger offensively. The key to using this Life in combat is to dodge and wait for openings to land hits.

Skill Upgrade Priority

Charge Attack > Special Charge > Special Skills

Prioritize Your Charge Attack (Heavy Swing and Dragon Claw)

Make sure to focus on Heavy Swing I at the beginning as this is your main source of damage. Other good Skills to activate are ones that lessen the charge time and increase your SP.

Special Charge Gives You a Buff to All Damage

While the Special Skills might seem tempting, try to get Special Charge as soon as you can as it buffs all of your damage versus the Special Skills that take a while before you can fire them off.

Stat Upgrade Priority

Charge Time = SP Consumption > Attack and Crit > HP and Defense

Focus Only on Attack if You Need to Burn Through Skill Points

After investing on your Charge Attack's SP and Charge Time, then you can add more stats into Attack. Only go to the left branch of the tree when you're ready to get Dragon Claw.

There's Some SP Panels at the Bottom Branch

If you find yourself lacking in SP, there's a few SP Panels at the bottom branch. Do keep in mind you first need to invest Skill Points on HP, so you can also craft some SP Potions instead.

Charge First, Smash Later

The basic strategy for Mercenary is to lead with Charge, boosting your attack power before you engage enemies.

Especially when taking on higher-level mobs, it's best to activate Charge outside aggro range, then immediately open with Heavy Swing or Dragon Claw to land heavy hits from the start.

Play Hit-and-Run with Normal Attacks

Since Mercenaries rely on slow, heavy-hitting attacks at close range, you're vulnerable during wind-ups. The recommended tactic is to approach using an Emergency Evasion Attack, follow up with 1-2 Normal Attacks, then dodge away before the enemy retaliates.

Repeat this pattern to safely whittle down foes without eating counterattacks.

Save SP for Charged Moves

Normal attacks are fine for chipping away, but your real damage comes from charged skills and tension moves like Earth Impact.

Avoid wasting SP on unnecessary skills between big hits, and stock up on SP Recovery items for longer boss fights.
