There are a total of 50 unlockable buddies in the game, which are located in Shrines, story progression, and in post-game content.
Most of them are found as Strangelings as first, so be sure to hunt for them and revert them back to their original forms to have them join your party!

Where to Find Buddies

Explore Shrines
Some Strangelings can be found at the end of Shrines, so explore them and hopefully snag a Strangeling once you're done roaming around the Shrine.
Progress the Story
Naturally progress the story to get some Strangelings, as sections in the game will reward you with Strangelings especially during main quests.
Defeat Crowned Monsters
Monsters marked with crowns can yield Strangelings as drops when defeated in combat, so check you're map for monsters that have crowns similar to the image above.
Do note that Strangelings being dropped are not fixed, so may likely get random Strangelings or even none after defeating them.
Visit Unexplored Areas
Strangelings are usually housed inside treasure chests, so it's a good idea to roam around newly visited locations and see what the area has to offer.

How to Revert Strangelings to Buddies
Offer Celestia's Gift to the Goddess Statue
Buddies can be reverted back into their human forms once you've visited the Goddess Statue during Chapter 3 of the game, specifically where you unlock the Guild Office at the Base Camp.
From there, offer a Celestia's Gift to the Goddess Statue to turn the Strangelings into Buddies. Do note that these Celestia's Gifts bloom once a day in real-world time, so make sure to acquire them when able.
What Are Buddies?
Companions That Were Once Strangelings
Buddies are companions that have once been Strangelings who have now reverted back into their human forms. They can help you with tasks that are involved with the Life you've chosen in the game.
Unique Skills Acquired From Affinity Levels
Buddies also provide unique skills and passive buffs which the players can take advantage of in the game. These skills are only earned when the affinity level is reached for that specific buddy, enabling you to use the unique skill.
How to Raise Buddy Affinity
Talk to Buddies at the Base Camp
Talking to Buddies at the Base Camp can help increase their affection levels, so make sure to interact with your Buddies every now and then to get their affection level up.
Give Gifts to Your Buddies
Giving gifts to your Buddies will also increase their affection levels in the game. Do note that not all Buddies can be given a gift, so take note of Buddies who you can give them to.

Anonymous 6 monthsIs Yuelia a buddy too? We need to get 50 golden celestias gift for something alluding to Flutter (Yuelia), so is she the 50th Buddy? Or was 50 a typo? I have only managed to get 5 so far so I won’t be finding out anytime soon lol
