Dragon Quest Treasures is a treasure hunting spin off game and is also a prequel to the latest entry to the game's mainline series Dragon Quest XI. Dragon Quest Treasures is indeed a prequel to Dragon Quest XI. However, the game does not highlight the story of the Luminary, the game's main character, but rather that of Erik and Mia. Erik is one of the playable characters and the thief of the party's main roster. Mia is another major character that due to unfortunate events in the game, has turned to gold. Both characters are playable in Dragon Quest Treasures.

While playing its XI is not a necessity, knowing the events of the original game before playing the game will provide more entertainment value to the player by knowing a back story of one of the game's main party members. The game is more akin as a fan service
