You can unlock this contract quest by reading the letter on the Notice Board at Velen near Crow's Perch.
This quest is not failable.
| Objectives | |

| 1 | Speak to Chet about the details of the contract. |
| 2 | Investigate the site of the monster's attack using your witcher senses. |
| 3 | Follow the trail of blood using your witcher senses. |
| 4 | Find the monster's lair inside the cave. |
| 5 | Use bombs to lure the monster out of its lair. |
| 6 | Chase down the monster. |
| 7 | Kill the monster. |
| 8 | Take the trophy from the monster. |
| 9 | Return to Chet and collect your reward. |
Use Dancing Star Bombs instead of Grapeshot Bombs to lure the Cockatrice out of its lair. You need to save as much Grapeshot Bombs as you can to use later on the fight.
Cockatrice will fly away during this fight. Use your crossbow to shoot it down and get them in range of your sword attacks.
You will receive a huge amount of XP reward and you will be able to take the Cockatrice Trophy from its corpse.

You should talk to the boy behind the cabin about avenging his father. You have a chance to jedi mind trick him to be calm for some xp. After you kill the shrieker you can go talk to the boy again and let him know his father has been avenged.
