Shield Runes are powerful abilities that activate upon parrying a Hell Surge attack in Doom: The Dark Ages. Read on for a list of Runes, as well as an explanation on what Runes are!

Ground Fissure |
Auto Turret |
|
Holy Swarm

Heaven Splitter is the best rune, as it can stun enemies, giving you room to breathe. A fully upgraded Heaven Splitter will deal damage and apply effects to a wider area, as well as inflict Shock on affected enemies, making them take more damage from your attacks.
Ground Fissure damages and falters enemies once activated. It can also Scorch enemies and make them drop armor once fully upgraded. Heaven Splitter is still the best in terms of crowd control, as stun lasts longer than falter.
The Auto Turret focuses its damage on a single enemy, making it effective against leaders and bosses. Fully upgrading the Auto Turret increases its duration, rate of fire, and damage, and also causes enemies damaged by it drop health, increasing your survivability.
The Holy Swarm rune seeks out enemies and deals damage to them, making it good against waves of fodder enemies. Its upgrades increase the damage and the number of summoned ethereal daggers upon activation.
| Runes | Effect | Unlocked On |
|---|---|---|
Ground Fissure
|
Summon a ground-splitting fissure that travels in front of you, damaging and faltering demons in its path. |
Chapter 9: Ancestral Forge |
Holy Swarm
|
Unleash a swarm of ethereal daggers that spread out and seek toward nearby demons. |
Chapter 11: Hellbreaker |
Auto Turret
|
A shoulder-mounted Auto Turret will activate, firing ballistic rounds at a single target in front of you. |
Chapter 12: Sentinel Command Station |
Heaven Splitter
|
Transform Hell surge projectiles into a bolt of energy that calls down lightning on impact, stunning nearby demons. |
Chapter 14: Spire of Nerathul |

Shield Runes are activated by parrying Hell Surge attacks and projectiles. There are a total of four Shield Runes, each with different effects that will help you clear enemies in the area faster.
They can be upgraded to further increase their effectiveness in battle. Go to a Sentinel Shrine and unlock the upgrades of your chosen Shield Rune.
