In battle, move your cursor to a character you want to swap out and open the Commands menu by pressing triangle.
In the Commands menu, select the option below your character's portait that says Switch Units.
From the Switch Units menu, you are able to swap out any characters that are currently not being used, and even assign adjutants.
After selecing the characters you want switched, hit confirm and resume battle with your swapped unit and/or adjutant.
Switching of units is limited to three per battle. After hitting the limit, you will have to use the units you're currently using until the end of the mission.
Note that the character switch limit of three per battle is fixed and will not go any higher even at the latter stages of the game.
Switching out characters can prove to be helpful during drawn-out battles, since benched units have max health and EP if they've yet to participate in battle. If you find your primary party mobbed and low on HP, you can swap them out for your benched units to have a fresh character ready for battle in a pinch.
If you plan on fully utilizing character switching, especially for moments wherein you need certain classes or characters swapped out, it is recommended to level up and invest in characters apart from your main in order to make sure that anyone who is in your rotation are able to keep up with your strongest units.
Being able to quickly switch units and adjutants allows players to be more adaptable to sudden changes in battle.
For instance, when a situation suddenly calls for a melee-focused team comp, players can simply swap out their current ranged units with Soldiers or Cavaliers and adjust accordingly.
After obtaining Iscarion, you will later be joined by a new recruit once you clear Chapter 1: Redditch Estate Recon. Given that there can only be four characters in battle, one of your party members will automatically become an adjutant.
From there, you will be able to remove the fifth character as an adjutant, transfer them to become another character's adjutant, or swap them out with a main unit.
