Sticks are the best fuel for various reasons. The first is that it is easy to get, either from stick piles scattered throughout the map, or from cutting down trees.
Additionally, sticks are only used in some recipes, specifically arrows, food skewers, and low-tier equipment. Lastly, it has a chance of turning into charcoal when used as fuel, providing you with even more fuel.

Charcoal is a good alternative fuel because it is a possible byproduct of burning any of the available fuels in the game (except itself). This effectively increases your fuel capacity, as you can get more mileage from using both the source fuel and the resulting charcoal when cooking or smelting ore.
It is important to note that all burned fuel gives the same amount of charcoal. For example, one stick gives the same amount of charcoal as one log when used as fuel. It is also important to remember that charcoal production happens by chance.

While logs are an okay fuel alternative, they are not recommended due to their multiple uses, both as a crafting component in recipes like workbenches, and as a building material when converted in the Builder's Workbench.
If you find yourself making too many wooden building materials like planks or stairs, you can use those as fuel once you finish making your house. This doubles as a way to get rid of clutter from your chests.
While Tree Sap and Plant Fiber can both be used as fuel, you should not use them as fuel at all. Tree Sap is an important component of Torches, which you will always need when exploring in caves or in the dark.
Plant Fiber, on the other hand, burns too fast, making it inefficient as fuel. It is also used in a lot of recipes, so it is better to just store them for crafting than use them as fuel.
