Hytale Multiplayer Guide: How to Play With Friends

Hytale supports online multiplayer features for both co-op and PvP, but does not have local co-op or split-screen support. Learn about how Multiplayer works and how to start playing with friends in this guide!

Does Hytale Have Local Co-Op?

Local Co-Op or Split-screen Not Supported Yet

Hytale currently does not support local co-op or split-screen play in Early Access. All multiplayer is online, and playing in split-screen mode on the same device is not possible.

Co-op and PvP

Hytale supports online co-op multiplayer, enabling players to share adventures with friends by exploring the world, battling creatures, and collaborating on building together. The game also features PvP, which can be enabled by the host through the world settings, allowing players on the server to fight one another.

In addition, Minigames is another mode that supports both co-op and PvP through custom games featuring social and competitive objectives.

As of this writing, Minigames is not yet available, and multiplayer is limited to Exploration and Creative Modes during early access.

Choose Between World or Server

World or Server
Multiplayer can be experienced by hosting or joining a private world or by playing on a dedicated server. The basic differences are as follows:

World A private world hosted by a player. The host must be online for others to join. Friends can join using an invitation code.
Server A world on a dedicated server runs continuously without the host player, allowing others to join at any time using the server’s IP address.

The easiest way to play multiplayer with your friends is by using a standard world, as you only need an invitation code to join one another. On the other hand, setting up a dedicated server requires more effort, but it is ideal if you want to host or join a larger community.

Max Players Not Confirmed Yet

Max Players
The exact limit of players that can join a world or server for Multiplayer hasn’t been officially confirmed yet, and it may change during and after early access. Server default configurations indicate a maximum of 100 players, but this may be adjusted as development progresses.

How to Play with Friends

Invite Friends via Code

To allow your friends to join your world, start by tweaking your Online Play Settings via the menu. Tick the Allow Others to Join setting then, set up a password (optional), generate the share code, and give it to them.

Note that you won't be able to join game worlds if the owner isn't online. Also, remember not to share the code to strangers as the code contains a copy of your IP address!

Create Your Own Server

Aside from inviting via code, you can also create a private server for your friends to join. However, do note that the process is time consuming as it involves installing Java 25 and editing multiple files required to setup the server.

How to Make and Host a Server

Join a Public Server

For a quick and easy game session, you and your friends can opt to join a public server in order to play together. Find a suitable server for you and your friends as each server has their own rules, mods, and content that cater specific type of players.

All of the public servers are found on Hytale's Servers Page and you can copy and enter them through the Servers Menu in-game.
