Joy-Con controllers are essential in Nintendo Switch Sports. All of the controls of every sport in the game use motion controls, and the gestures required to do these actions are designed with having one or both Joy-Con controllers in your hand/s.
At the very least, you should have one pair of Joy-Con controllers. This will allow you to check out all of the sports if you are playing solo.
It is also possible to play the game with another person with only one pair of Joy-Cons, although it may come with some limitations. In Chambara, using the Twin Swords require a player to use two Joy-Con controllers, which can't be done if there is only one controller available.
If you have multiple Joy-Cons you can connect them to your Switch and play with more people locally, depending on the maximum number of players allowed per sport.
The use of Pro Controllers are not supported, as there are no gamepad controls included with each sport.
Switch Sports Controller Support
It is important that you secure the Joy-Con controllers in your hand by using Joy-Con straps and attaching it to your wrist to avoid any accidents that may hurt and damage you, another player, or the objects around your play area.
Almost all of the gesture controls in Nintendo Switch Sports require you to move your arms around in all sorts of directions. You must always exercise caution and wear the wrist straps, especially if the games you are playing are getting more intense!
Nintendo Switch Sports is best played on a bigger screen compared to playing it while your Switch is undocked. Along with the Switch Dock, you also need an HDMI cable to connect to a screen and your Switch AC Adapter to keep it powered.
Playing on a TV screen, for example, allows you and the people you are playing with to see more clearly and easily, especially if you are playing in a large room.
The game demands sharp eyes and quick reaction times, which can be easily attained if you are playing with your Switch docked to a bigger screen.
If you own a Switch Lite system, Switch Sports can still be played but you will have a hard time seeing the game due to the console's small screen.
Is Switch Sports Compatible With the Switch Lite?
The Leg Strap accessory is used in Soccer's Shoot-Out mode, with an upcoming update that supports using the strap in regular Soccer matches. This will let you do more kicking motions when playing the sport.
A Leg Strap is included in Physical Edition of Nintendo Switch Sports and can be bought separately if you purchased the Digital Edition of the game.
Nintendo Switch Sports Release Date and Editions
Soccer can be played without using the Leg Strap, as the game can be played with motion controls using your hand.
The accessory is only required when playing the Shoot-Out mode, as it requires you to accurately kick the ball into the goal. An update regarding the usage of the Leg Strap in Shoot-Out mode will be released in Summer 2022.
