The Controller Update is a one-time mini-patch to calibrate your Joy-Con controllers for Nintendo Switch Sports. Read on to see what the mini-patch does, how to install the update, and what controllers can be updated.
Though Nintendo has not released an official statement on the contents of the update, it is likely to improve its motion controls or make it more compatible with movements in the game.
Many of the sports in the game have complex motions that the Joy-Cons may not be fully equipped to handle, such as Leg Strap motions in Soccer. The update might have been added to better support these actions.
The controller update is only available for official Nintendo Joy-Con controllers and cannot be installed on third-party controllers or pro controllers. The update is one of the many reasons why other controllers cannot be used in the game.
Controller Support: Can You Use a Pro Controller?
You are immediately prompted to install the controller update after connecting your Joy-Cons to the Switch while playing Nintendo Switch Sports.
After choosing to update your controllers, you will be asked not to press any of the buttons while the update is installing. It may take a few minutes to complete the install.

No idea whether it's just my imagination but I noticed a huge improvement when playing other motion control-games such as just dance. All my high scores improved by at least 300 points after the update.
