The Type of a Monster will determine what Oil it is weak against. For example, Monsters of the Necrophage Type will receive 10% extra damage from Swords coated in Necrophage oil.

There are only a few Giants to fight in the game, namely the Ice Giant, Golyat the Giant, and the Cloud Giant. All of them require different techniques to effectively defeat them but the most common thing to do is to constantly protect youself with the Quen Sign while slowly whittling down its HP with sword attacks.
You should use your Silver Sword and coat it with Ogroid oil to deal bonus damage to them.
