A combined set of the Eyepatch headpiece and two pieces of the Sizzling set (Robes and Boots) will be our armor of choice for the mage build. Sizzle Reduction is important as you go through the game with more and more enemies inflicting sizzle, partner it with Mage Armor's stamina cost reduction for mage attacks, and you'll have a ranged DPS build with consistent damage output!
We added the Eyepatch instead of the final Sizzling set to increase our attack's flat damage output, which stacks up incredibly fast due to our fast attack speed. If you want a more defensive setup, you can replace the Eyepatch with the Butterfly Circlet to gain a single level of its Frosty Focus, which gives a slight defensive damage reduction when you perfect parry a bug's attack.

Scorching Orb
|
Base Tier: Tier II
Handling Type: Candy Staves Damage Type: Spicy Mods: Sizzling Attack Sizzling Attack Effect: Attacks cause foes to sizzle and burn.
|
The Scorching Orb will be our main weapon of choice for our mage build. It can inflict sizzle in a large area using its charged attacks and has a decent attack speed and projectile tracking for its basic hits.
This weapon already provides you a steady source of damage, but to top it off, any cookable bug will immediately drop cooked meat when killed. This lets you explore much longer without worrying about your hunger stat as well as HP, thanks to some bug's regenerative effect when eaten.

Astonishing Acid
|
Base Tier: Tier I
Mods: Finale Damage Finale Damage Effect: The final hit in your 3 hit combo does more damage.
|
The Scorching Orb's 3rd hit deals more damage than the first two hits. Astonishing Acid increases your 3rd hit even further, which makes your total DPS much higher. It's also easy to craft and can be changed with higher-risk but higher-reward trinkets later on.
| Mutation | Type and Effects |
|---|---|
Whittle Wizard
|
Type: Fighting Styles
Effects: Whittle Wizard Whittle Wizard Effect: Staff attacks are enchanced by elemental effects. Sizzle burns with greater intensity. Frozen foes that shatter take more damage.
, Staff Master Staff Master Effect: Critical hit chance with staff attacks is increased on frozen and burning foes with max buildup.
|
Cardio Fan
|
Type: Survival
Effects: Hyperstamina Hyperstamina Effect: Regain stamina faster.
, Exhaustion Exhaustion Effect: Lowers the amount of time you spend exhausted after using all of your stamina.
|
While the build can use multiple Mutations, we highly recommend getting the Whittle Wizard and Cardio Fan as top priorities. Whittle Wizard is a direct damage increase when you sizzle your enemy, which you can often do with your charged attacks.
Cardio Fan, on the other hand, makes you regain your stamina faster, which you will always be spending (either by attacking, guarding, or dashing). You can never have enough stamina with this build, which is why we recommend Cardio Fan as a very high-priority Mutation.

Overall, this mage build is a very stamina-centric build and for good reason, as a DPS mage build exhausts stamina. You will always be either shooting fireballs or charging your attack for a giant fireball, when not defending against enemy attacks. This build keeps stamina up while also amping up damage output.
Your first goal against high HP targets is to sizzle them first with your charged attacks. Try to initiate fights with a charged fireball and hit them multiple times to burn them. This will also be our main way to activate our damage boost from the Whittle Wizard Mutation.
As a ranged class with no ammunition, you'll want to be in-range while shooting fireballs at your foes. Stay in optimal range, and if you're not charging hits or defending, make sure that you're swinging the next fireball to their face.
