Here is a list of all the combat and gearing terminologies in the game. We highly recommend familiarizing yourself as this will be your foundation in understanding all of the game's combat mechanics.

Attacks and Lymbic attacks are your main method of dealing damage against enemies. Get close to enemies and hit them with attacks using the square button or the Triangle button to use these attacks. Note that Charged Attacks consume Lymbic Energy, so you need to think wisely about when it is best to weave them.
Guard against enemy hits to reduce the damage you take from their attacks. The damage you take will be equivalent to your weapon's guard rating. The higher the percentage is, the higher the damage you reduce from enemy hits.
You can also time your guard input to parry the enemy attacks. Parrying will fully negate the enemy's attack while also dealing some stagger damage to enemies. Fully staggering enemies will stun them for a brief moment and will allow you to launch a critical hit on them for a big burst of damage called riposte.
Use the dodge function to create space between you and the enemy quickly. Alternatively, you can also use it to dash in and get to enemy range. Always use your dashes and dodges to navigate the battlefield, but avoid overusing them to prevent running out of stamina.
The endurance system is a feature that ties your highest possible stamina based on your current HP. What this means is you will have less stamina and mobility the lower your HP is and vice versa. Always understand how endurance works and adjust your actions mid-combat accordingly.
Avoid panic healing with your limited consumables and maximize the Healing Pulse mechanic. Hitting enemies will cause you to generate a white ring on your waist. Once it glows and forms a circle shape, you can use the Healing Pulse input to consume it and heal your HP.
However, it is still better to have your consumables ready in case you make a mistake mid-fight. Head to your loadout and equip a consumable item in one of the 8 item slots to be able to use it immediately in combat. We recommend equipping Medkits to restore HP or Lymbic Capacitors for quickly replenishing Lymbic Energy.
Part of combat is equipping the right gear and socketables. These will greatly increase combat prowess by providing you more stats or give you unique active and passive skills.
Drone Modules allow your drone to perform specific abilities that can help you in and out of combat. Relics are equippable modifiers to weapons that you can use to trigger powerful effects or wield powerful passive abilities. Defensive Gear is your armor that will give you more damage reduction, health, stamina, and unique defensive effects.

Poking with short combo strings and then backing off is a great strategy, but staying aggressive in this game pays off, as you can steal Lymbic Energy and recover HP through Healing Pulse as you attack enemies. However, do still be cautious about approaching cluster of enemies, as they can easily overwhelm you despite these mechanics!
Glyphs and Relics provide you with active and passive effects that will give you an edge in battle. We recommend aiming to get and using meta glyphs and relics, such as the Wave of Wrath and the Orison of Valour to be able to deal with enemies faster or traverse the map quicker.

The enemy attack frequency can be changed to speed up their tempo or slowed. Use this together with an enemy damage reduction to get a proper parry and/or dodge timing against enemy attacks.

There is no direct leveling in Hell Is Us. Instead, you can upgrade your gear by going to a blacksmith and upgrading it or by using your weapon repeatedly to level it up. Be sure to upgrade your defensive gear first, as this will directly affect your maximum HP and maximum stamina, as well as the number of hits you can take.
Enemy attacks will often have colored after-images when used. Parrying these hits will generate a huge amount of poise damage to that specific enemy, which can stagger them and open the opportunity for a strong critical hit.
Lock-On is not just a feature you can use to focus a camera on an enemy; it also directs your attacks to the target you're locking on. This is true for your attacks and true for your drones as well. Be sure to use this feature to the fullest, such as immobilizing other enemies using drones or glyphs, and controlling the flow of a fight.
Dodges have a certain small number of frames where enemy hits won't be able to register on your character. This frame is at the first few frames of your dodge, so timing your dodge input against enemy attacks will let you dodge it regardless of whether you're supposed to get hit by an enemy attack.
