At the blacksmith shop, you can upgrade a weapon to expand its maximum level and attach a Lymbic Sphere to it. The type of sphere determines the special ability and attributes the weapon can equip through Glyphs.
Based on our testing, there are no elemental advantages over Lymbic Spheres. The only thing that Lymbic Spheres affect is the type of Glyph that you can use with the weapon.
Lymbic Spheres (Elements) Explained

Just like with weapons, you can improve your defensive gear with upgrades. Doing so also installs a Lymbic Sphere on that piece of gear, enabling you to level it up further and equip it with powerful Glyphs.
List of All Armor and Defensive Gear

You can also craft situational items that are powerful upon consumption. These include Lymbic Batteries, which help you regenerate Lymbic Energy over time. And Suppressors, which reduce a specific type of incoming damage for a brief period.

You can upgrade Victor Gaz's smithing abilities by finding Forgebooks scattered throughout the map.

From the Village of Jova, head east along the main path until you reach a burning tunnel. Use the manual save point at the tunnel’s entrance, then fight your way through the horde of enemies inside. Once the area is clear, locate the nearby maintenance room to speak with Victor Gaz. Ask him about Vitalis, and he’ll give you the key to Vitalis’ house.

Go back to the Village of Jova and find the Vitalis house. It is directly in front of the Blacksmith's Shop. Unlock it using the key Victor Gaz gave you. Go down to the basement and solve the puzzle.
To solve the puzzle, find the family pictures scattered around the house; you'll need the heirloom necklace to get the last one. Place the picture frames in their correct spots on the basement wall. This will reveal the numbers for the nearby locked door. Enter the code 32-17-13 and get the Vigil Note inside.

Go back outside. Victor Gaz will greet you and invite you to the opened Blacksmith's Shop. Speak with Victor Gaz at his shop to initiate the weapon upgrade process. This opens the upgrade menu. In exchange for shards, you will be able to upgrade weapon, imbue defensive gears, and weave lymbic consumables.
Act 1 Complete Walkthrough and Secrets
Before pouring resources into your weapons, upgrade your primary armor. Increasing your damage reduction and stamina will dramatically improve your survivability, giving you more room for error in difficult fights.
Once your defenses are solid, focus on upgrading the weapon you use most often. A higher-level weapon not only does more damage but also allows you to equip better Glyphs for powerful combat effects.
It's also advisable to craft consumables, especially when preparing for a specific boss or a challenging area to tip the odds in your favor.
