While it might be tempting to just beat everything up that comes your way, try to prioritize Fitness Books as they can give you an edge while exploring and in combat. Survival is your next priority as having to start over in a game with no manual saves can get annoying.

You only ever need to go for Combat and Brawling when you are close to a boss fight as most enemies in the game can be sneaked up on which deals more damage. Packing should be the last in your priority unless you're on harder difficulties since it's hard enough to heal and eat in the middle of a fight.

If you're looking for maxing out your progress in each location, make sure to grab the Notes and Mysteries books first as they have the best value as the Notes books show you the locations of all missable photographs and other missable notes.

Meanwhile, the Mysteries Books will tell you of any quests which unlocks locations you could miss if you just progress through the Exploration quests.

While the other collectible books and other stuff are great, most of these are usually placed in locations where progressing through various quests will lead you naturally where they are placed. The Guides books for shorter maps could be good but these locations are usually smaller in scale, making it easier to find notes.
