You can open padlocked boxes by hitting them with a melee weapon, which will destroy the lock to reveal the contents inside.

You can also use the blunt end of a gun to open boxes. When equipped with a gun, use the X, Square, or E to turn the gun into a melee weapon to hit the padlocked box.

Locked Boxes That Contain Money

Padlocked Boxes are small boxes with a padlock that Indy can find scattered throughout the world. Unlike other locked containers, these boxes don't require a code to unlock and are instead opened by breaking the padlock with a melee weapon.

You can find Padlocked Boxes as early as in The Vatican chapter of the game and contain a substantial amount of money from the area they're found!
