As Soul Eater is useless against a boss unless you use Judgement it doesn't seem worth going all the way back to Gregminster every time you want him in your party. Unless this has changed for Suikoden 2.
Having to run back to re-recruit him every time you want to use him is a huge pain. Your party is force-wiped quite often due to story events. So it really makes him highly unattractive to use when there are characters with similar or better power. He's just for the nostalgia, in my opinion.
You will have to go back and recruit him every time he is forced removed from the party. Yea he is good… but the 3-5 min trip to get him every time… he shouldn’t be listed as SS.
Tir Protects Riou sometimes in battle when his HP is low.
