The Iron Armor is currently the best overall armor set in the game's early access. With Ranged and Magic lacking any skill perks, Attack is the best combat style and the armor set offers the best melee defense and perks in engaging enemies in melee combat.

Studded Leather and Dark Mage Robes are the ranged and magic counterpart to Iron Armor. While they offer higher ranged and magic defense respectively, these are not as important in the game's early access.
You can simply dodge ranged attacks or use a shield to block them and sources of magic are restricted to Garou Druids who are fairly rare. Enemies that attack with melee attacks, however, are more plentiful which means the high melee defense that Iron Armor offers is more valuable.

The Paladin Armor Set is a Masterwork Armor that has the same stats and set bonus as the Iron Armor but costs more materials to craft. As a result, upgrading to the Paladin Armor is not necessary and is more of a cosmetic upgrade.
