The best IVs for Gunter are +Def and -Res. A higher Def will make him better at where he does best, tanking physical attacks. Gunter's Res is already low and he isn't really cut for dealing with magic attacks, so it is safe to take Res as a bane.

How to Use, Explanation

This is a tank build for Gunter. Double Bracing Stance will boost his defenses, while Quick Riposte gives him a guaranteed follow-up attack. Hone Cavalry will boost other cavalry allies, but can be replaced with another skill that your party may need.

We recommend the Special Effect Refine for Inveterate Axe

In addition to its original effect which already is good on its own, Gunter's Inveterate Axe grants Atk/Def +4 to infantry and cavalry allies within 2 spaces of him during combat. The same effect is applied to Gunter whenever at least one infantry or cavalry unit is within 2 spaces of him. It is a pretty powerful effect that is easy to trigger. This makes Gunter a good unit to build a team of infantry and cavalry units around.

Hone Cavalry Strengthens Cavalry-based Teams

Hone Cavalry is a great skill that Gunter learns at 4 stars. It grants adjacent cavalry allies +6 Atk/Spd. This skill makes Gunter a good unit to build strong cavalry units around. This skill is especially useful in big maps such as Rival Domains events.

Armored Blow 3 Boosts Survivability

Armored Blow 3 grants +6 Def to Gunter if he initiates combat. This makes good as a player phase unit as it reduces the damage he takes from counterattacks. If you inherit skills like Ignis and Bonfire to Gunter, Armored Blow 3 can also allow you to deal more damage.
